Starting antidepressants just before Christmas?

Hi all,

My mental health is on the floor at the moment and I know I need to go onto antidepressants 😢

It’s been a while since I’ve taken them and I was wondering if it was a bad idea to start just before Christmas? Don’t want to be having horrible side effects at Christmas but also I’m so depressed I’m struggling to even look forward to it at the moment.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I started them a week before Christmas last year. I remember them making me feel a bit foggy, but I wasn’t coping without them so would have struggled anyway.

This is exactly my thinking, either way I'm not doing well so if I have started them there will be some light at the end of the tunnel.

Thank you x

Definitely start taking them sooner rather than later! You may feel a bit strange or have some symptoms for the first couple of days but that soon subsides. Christmas Day is just a day and how you're feeling every day is more important. Antidepressants make me feel like who I used to be and be the mum that I want to be x

I completely agree I'm going to call the doctor get the ball rolling.

May I ask what antidepressants you take?

Happy they are helping you.

Thank you x

I take sertraline which is good if you are anxious and jumpy. Start now. You'll be a new woman by the New Year.

Jenkibubble · 12/12/2024 10:41

Xmas day is just a day !
If you feel lousy that’s OK - you could even replicate it when you are feeling slightly better

RF1107 · 12/12/2024 10:45

I also take sertraline, just makes me feel more mellow, not so irrational and irritable! It also helps with the anxiety I used to get in the middle of the night at 3am and insomnia, I sleep so much better now.

RF1107 · 12/12/2024 10:48

Also whatever you do don't google the symptoms of whichever AD you are prescribed, it's all so negative and will put you off taking it. They're also usually from people who haven't given it a chance to work x

Easypeasymacncheesy · 12/12/2024 14:19

I took Sertraline for 3 months before swapping to Citalopram. I found the Sertraline worked really well for my mental health, but it made me constantly exhausted. I didn’t feel safe driving in an afternoon as I physically couldn’t keep my eyes open. I also found I lost the ability or orgasm!

I swapped to Citalopram and found them to not work quite as well for made me less tired and brought back most of my sexual functions.

After 7 months I weaned myself off them but I wish I had stayed on them. I am slipping backwards now and tempted to try them again.

Scutterbug · 12/12/2024 14:50

I would start them now. I found when I went back on them after a break, I had no side effects.

Can I ask for those taking Sertraline, I think I messed up big time with my doses and its put me off although I do need them. I started on 25mg for 2 days (dosage was 50mg) and took it at 7pm. Upped to 50mg on the 3rd day and took it at 7pm, felt a bit woozy and off kilter all day the next day a little bit sick etc so thought id better take the next dose a bit earlier so it was worn off for bedtime and took another 50mg at 3pm on the 4th day. By 6pm on the same day I was in a right mess.

I had horrific side effects, waves of nausea so bad I had to keep my head out the window in the cold air, trembling and felt absolutely shocking to the point it put me off and I stopped taking them. But I did feel better initially - did I overdose myself? Has anyone done this by accident before?

I have never taken them before so the whole thing is new to me. I have suffered with postpartum depression very badly and I have anxiety, emetophobia and a few other niggles.

How are you feeling OP?

I went to the doctors the day after this post and took my first sertraline tablet that day.

It's been 5 days and I'm already feeling better I have to say! My first day was ruff but apart from that I really haven't had any terrible side effects.

I want to thank you all that replied as it really was the push I needed to call the doctor so thank you all so much. X

I would really suggest you take the tablet the same time every day.
