Sam-e for anxiety / depression

Has anyone tried this for anxiety and/or depression? I have a family member who swears by it, but it’s quite expensive. This family member lives in the US where it seems more popular or known, I never hear about it in the UK?

These are the supposed benefits (edited to add sorry about the formatting, it’s being weird) :

S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e) is a naturally occurring compound in the body that plays a role in various biochemical processes, including the production and regulation of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters are key players in mood regulation. Here's how SAM-e may help:

  1. Boosts Neurotransmitter Activity: SAM-e helps in the production of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which are neurotransmitters linked to mood regulation. Imbalances in these chemicals are often associated with depression and anxiety.
  1. Anti-inflammatory Effects: SAM-e may reduce inflammation in the brain, which some studies have linked to mood disorders like depression.
  1. Methylation Support: SAM-e is involved in methylation, a process that affects gene expression and brain function. Proper methylation is crucial for mood regulation and overall mental health.
  1. Energy and Cognitive Function: Some studies suggest SAM-e might enhance energy levels and cognitive function, which can help combat the fatigue and brain fog often associated with depression.

I don't think I've heard of it before, but it sounds wonderful. Is it available on the NHS?

There's a lot about it online. I'd be very wary of it, not enough is known yet.
