Escitalopram Newbie

Hello everyone, I’m on my second day of Escitalopram 10mg and looking for some reassurance. I’ve previously been on Citalopram (successfull until it stopped working). Fluoxetine (took months to work and was too energising), Sertraline (awful experience with terrible gut issues/reflux). Venlafaxine (violently sick an hour after taking first dose!)
I asked to try Escitalopram as it seems to get a good rap. I’m really quite worried about the nausea aspect but this one is supposed to be associated with less side effects. Is this your experience? I have some annual leave booked off work so hoping the symptoms only last a week or so. Is that realistic? First pill made me quite drowsy with some nausea so I’ve decided to swap to night time. Hoping this helps me sleep as I haven’t lately.

would love to hear how this one has worked for you. Thanks.

I am on 20mg a day, I take it at night. Its doesn't help me sleep bur it mainly stops the night terrors and the intrusive thoughts. I hope it works for you. I didn't have any nausea as far as I remember.

BioBins · 24/02/2024 14:42

I found I felt like crying at lot of the time the first week, then after a couple of months my anxiety was much decreased.
I found I would get strange dreams if I took it at night, but I didn’t previously have sleep issues. Fingers crossed it works for you.

TinySpark · 24/02/2024 14:48

Thanks both, I have heard it can cause quite vivid dreams, I suppose I need to wait n see.

@Coffeesnob11 very glad to hear about the lack of nausea. This is my biggest fear.
Really appreciate you both replying. Xx

I was fortunate in that Escitalopram worked like magic for me, by day four I felt significantly better, it was amazing. Stayed on it for about a year then tapered off gradually.

TinySpark · 24/02/2024 16:52

@LiverpoolLassie1974 Wow! That’s brilliant….! And can I ask if you had many side effects? I know it’s different for everyone but it’s great to hear positive stories! Glad it worked for you and you’re out the other side 😊

I was on citalopram for a few years and it just gradullay stopped working.

Gp swapped me over to this one and I'm four weeks in now and feeling a lot better and calmer and my mind isn't racing with panic all the time thankfully.

I didn't realise how much the citalopram had stopped really working to be honest.

I do feel much better although still have moments but I can rationalise things in my mind now it's calmer

Following. In the same boat OP.

This is really interesting @dothehokeycokey . Citalopram was great for me until it wasn’t. I didn’t realise it had stopped working but my family did. I felt so calm on it initially and could maintain focus. Hoping Escitalopram can give me this back. Glad it’s working for you 😊

Fingers crossed you are ok on it too @BananaSplitsss 🤞

Fingers crossed you are ok on it too @BananaSplitsss 🤞

I’ve been given it.. terrified to try it. 10mg….

I am not sure I can cope much longer without intervention hence why I am here.

Good luck to you op and hope you’re ok 💕

TinySpark · 24/02/2024 19:30

I’m terrified too @BananaSplitsss I have a real fear of nausea/sickness so my gp prescribed Cyclizine to take if I need it. They’ve also given me a short supply of Diazepam to help dial down the anxiety whilst the Escitalopram takes effect. This is 2mg 3x daily. I understand they’re very addictive so I’ve only taken half of one tablet so far but it really helped. Maybe this would work for you? X

@TinySpark Only side effect I had was the sexual disfunction which I was prepared to put up with, didn't feel much like it anyway in my depression but I'm happy to report all returned to normal after I came off them.

TinySpark · 25/02/2024 12:15

Yeah @LiverpoolLassie1974 I’ve read that most SSRI’s kill libido. I’ve no real interest at the moment anyway so no issue there and other half understands.

Hi everyone, took second tablet last night and had ok sleep (I generally don’t sleep well so no difference there). But today I feel very on edge, whole body trembling and this is after 1mg of diazepam.

Just looking for some reassurance that this is just the meds kicking in. I have some Propranolol in the cupboard and wondering if anyone has tried this to calm symptoms?

Hi everyone, hope you’re all doing well.

I’m really struggling the last day or so. I feel like my anxiety has gone the the roof. I’m constantly trembling and I’m exhausted. Is this normal? I feel like a shadow of myself and wondering how long this bit will last. I’m signed off work for another few days and I’m feeling the pressure to feel better so I can get back. Looking for some reassurance. Thanks.
