IBS-D and Nortriptyline

Hi all,

My DS17 was recently diagnosed with IBS after suffering with gastrointestinal issues for more than 6 years. The consultant suggested the antidepressant Nortriptyline as DS experiences periods of extreme anxiety linked to worrying about his stomach and going to the toilet at school, when out, etc. I have researched the medication now and am really reluctant for him to start it due to the side effects listed - he cannot afford to have brain fog, to be spaced out, even worse - some people get depressed on it, have suicidal thoughts, as his A-level exams are in a few months time.

I will be grateful for any experiences of people who have tried this medication, especially for IBS. The gastrointestinal problems were the source of the anxiety initially but now the anxiety also worsens his stomach issues. I have read a lot about the brain-gut axis and know it is a vicious circle. We have tried all sorts of restrictive diets to no avail. Physical tests are all fine.

I understand that Nortriptyline only has effect while taken and if stopped symptoms return. Lots of people also have severe withdrawal symptoms (again from what I have read online).

Sorry for the lengthy post, I just really don’t know what to do - am I not allowing him something that will help him or will it cause him severe side effects and even worse issues? Thank you, if you have reached this far.

I know this is an old thread. Did your ds take the Nortriptyline in the end? How did he get on?
