Sudden anxiety

Hi all,

Has anyone ever felt any sudden anxiety following a virus at all? I am perimenopausal and i usually have symptoms of brain fog/irritability 2 weeks before my period but this extreme anxiety came on quite suddenly as I'm recovering from a lingering virus so I was just wondering if it could be linked or if it's just another perimenopausal symptom to add to my list 🙄

Any thoughts?

I've never had it linked to a virus but am definitely experiencing anxiety and panic during perimenopause. Anxiety is a very common symptom of peri, I'm afraid.

I am on day 14 of my cycle so it's possible that it's a strong pmt symptom but it seems to have come on suddenly after that virus so I wasn't sure if anxiety following a virus was a thing. It sure feels like quite strong crippling anxiety.

Peri is more likely to cause that than a virus.

Yes! I had Covid and had a total and utter anxiety attack afterwards. I am peri and this triggered an awful few weeks on anxiety out of nowhere. Had to go on Mirtazapine to get out of it

I suffer with anxiety anyway but it's always worse when I'm coming down with something

What does the anxiety feel like OP? Is it worth or is it more just the physical impact of anxiety?

For me peri anxiety feels very physical, like coursing adrenaline - rather than cognitive, if that makes any sense.

Worry not worth!

More cognitive than physical tbh. So it's not palpitations or heart racing but it's more anxious thoughts and obsessions. I'm leaning more towards the aftermath of the virus now as fatigue can give you anxiety. Pair that with PMT being much worse for me for the past few year and it's no surprise it's hitting me hard. I'll see if it eases off in the next few months but either way I've got a doctor's appointment coming up to discuss peri symptoms. I'm 48.

Good to get this checked out. After a major near death infection 10yrs ago, after each time I was ill, about a week later, I had a bout of anxiety - health anxiety. It was not an illness I was anxious about at the time I had it, it's more like an unconscious delayed reaction.

I'm now perimenopausal, and get anxiety at certain times of the month, similar feeling but usually about something I'm worried about...but the post viral/illness thing is a defined thing now for me. Yay(!).

I had two viruses very close together and it triggered huge anxiety for me. I've had to go onto medication. I do have a history of health anxiety though.
