TTC - family history of bipolar

We havw been TTC for a month or so now. My mum is bipolar, the onset of which I believe happened after I was born (all a relatively hush hush topic in the family). I didn't appreciate that the condition is hereditary and can start after a stressful event like childbirth. I'm concerned about the risk of ending up in the same situation as my mum, which has caused her many issues throughout my life. The risk of inheriting is small but still a risk. Has anyone else been in the same situation?

Have you spoken to a doctor about your worries @Blueberrypie01?

Its tricky because I’m sure lots of people have had underlying symptoms from an earlier age and then potentially childbirth (or the hormones/relationship changes etc) could act as a trigger as with any mental illness. However, finding the cause and effect can be very tricky as these things are so complicated.

Have you ever had anyone raise that you might have bipolar before or exhibit any of the signs? If not I don’t think you should let the fear or worry about it put you off having a child. However, I would definitely speak to a doctor if you are concerned x

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have an appointment with my doctor in a few weeks. I've never had symptoms so hopefully that's a good sign x

I think you will be absolutely fine @Blueberrypie01 but always worth a chat with a GP to remove the anxiety ❤️
