Has anyone felt suicidal on amitriptyline

I've been on amitriptyline 10mg for around 6 or 7 weeks and the last 2 weeks I am feeling very low, overwhelmed, crying a lot, angry/rages and feelings of being suicidal. Has anyone else had this? Will it calm down or get worse? Currently sat in my car crying wondering how to get out of this horrible feeling. Thank you

I should add I'm not on this medication for depression, I'm trialing it for help with IBS.

I've never had them but which is worse? Feeling like this or the IBS? I'd come off them and maybe try something else

Giraff3 · 24/12/2023 17:05

They put me on them for migraine prevention as they prescribe them for nerve pain blockers. I had a side affect which made me feel like my eyeballs where going to explode with pressure. So the opticians told me to stop taking them.
Reading your post you may have a reaction as it takes around that time to get into ur system for depression ect so maybe thats why ur feeling as u are, but as you say ur only trialing for ibs.

May be worth taking less of the dose until gps open or ring the health care number to seek advise.

That is one of the side effects isn't it? I ws on the same dose for muscular pain. I didn't have suicidal thoughs but had terrible palpitations. Contact your GP. Good luck OP

I reacted terribly to it. I was on it for long term bladder pain in my early 20's. After a couple of weeks was suicidal, hallucinating and ended up in hospital. I was perfectly fine, with no mental health issues before I started taking it.

I've heard of many similar cases over the years.

I was prescribed a very low dose as an initiation dose, aiming to increase it, for pain. Within a few days I felt like my brain was short circuiting. Hell no to that so I’ve refused to take it. Unfortunately I’m still in pain and my GP will only come back with ‘well we could have tried a bit longer with amitryptaline but I’m not sure what else we can do’. Anyway yes it’s not universally well tolerated by far and low mood is a common side effect. Don’t be alone. Get onto your GP when they reopen.

I doubt it's the Ami to be honest. 10mg is a nothing dose, it's only really any good for nerve pain or sleep at those levels. It's not enough to affect your mood in any big way.

I've had it for years for depression and always been told by the psychatrist that there is no point taking it at less than 50mg as its just not enough to alter the chemical balance. I'd sleep well but that'd be about it.

That said, it's a very fast acting drug, if you're not seeing improvement with the IBS I'd drop it anyway. Side effects that don't disappear by 6 weeks are likely not going to. The only side effects I've ever had with it are dizziness, dry mouth and mood swings. They started at 75mg but didn't recur whe I increased it.

The mood swings and dizziness went after 2 weeks, the dry mouth was permanent and I still have it 7 years down the line. I don't mind, it's better than the depression and overall I tolerate Ami quite well but a lot of people don't, there's lots of side effects. That's why it isn't a first line drug anymore, it hits you like a bloody train but depending on how much you're suffering it can be worth it.

I've been on that dose for years and never experienced anything like this. It sounds horrendous.

Groovee · 24/12/2023 21:20

I've been on it for 14 years at 10mg for nerve pain. It took me a month to get used to it. But I have had friends who have struggled on it and been put on something else. Definitely see whoever prescribed it.

GG1986 · 24/12/2023 23:54

It is helping my IBS, so I really wanted it to not have horrible side effects, I know a lot of drugs do but was hoping feeling depressed wasn't going to be one of them, I've also had a skin reaction and my face and neck is covered in really bad spots/acne. It's.so difficult to know what to do.

I am seeing an improvement for the IBS, so it's really frustrating that it's making me feel this way and I really don't know what to do, I will call Dr in the new year to discuss.

Thank you so much everyone, helps to write it down when I was feeling the way I was earlier. I will call my gp in the new year to discuss.

At that dose it's quite sedating initially which is why you could be having this reaction. That may improve as your body gets used to it and its less sedating. It can effect your mood as you may feel lethargic and down because basically you are sedated.

suki1964 · 25/12/2023 00:08

Ami is really an amazing drug but as you have found out can have some pretty shit side effects

10mg isnt a high dose either tbh, I think I was on 60 -80mg for nerve pain - but those doses were arrived at very slowly and I some really rotten side effects - high anxiety being one. But talking with the GP and changing doses and time of day of taking them, I tolerated them

Get back to the GP , you may have to drop dose and slowly build it up which is totally possible
