Do you notice symptoms if you miss an antidepressant?

I’m on 100mg of sertraline for anxiety. If I forget to take a dose one morning I think I feel a bit more anxious during the day. Is that possible or is it my imagination?

It's not your imagination. 🙂

I’m not on them anymore but I found it was the worst thing about taking antidepressants. Not anxiety but weird dizziness if I ever missed a dose.

Sertraline half life is a bit longer than that which youd expecr to see associated with withdrawals within 24 hrs of last dose. On the other hand it must be personal. For me I dont notice a missed dose till around 60 hours are up after last dose. It also doesn’t make me more anxious but it does make me very short tempered and gives me a bit of a headache/ out of sorts feeling.

Definitely not your imagination. I absolutely used to notice if I missed one when I was on them.

That's me too.

Actually now you mention it, I think it might be feeling more irritable than anxious, just an odd feeling that something isn’t quite right, like being more on edge.

I tend to be restless and not able to sleep if I miss my 100mg sertraline dose. If I miss it for a few days, I get jittery and a tight chest, s if I drank too many red bulls/coffees.

My mental state takes a plummet if I miss a dose. Feel tearful and anxious straight away.

Kielyflower · 19/12/2023 18:45

Just for balance, I have never found this on Citalopram, though it does have a slightly longer half life (average 35 hours rather than 28 hours).

In the past I have regularly missed 2 doses a week and not felt any different.

NoisyDachshunddd · 19/12/2023 22:00

@Susieblue18 that is it exactly. Antsy, on edge. I owe my life to ADs but I also don’t like being beholden to these things that make me feel iffy if I forget to take them.

if and when you do stop taking them it is really important to wean off very slowly. Otherwise you can mistake withdrawal symptoms for a return of your original condition.

Balloonhearts · 21/12/2023 18:47

No. Its psychosomatic. They have quite a long half life so they're still very much in your system for at least 24 hours after your last dose. You shouldn't notice any withdrawal symptoms until 24 to 32 hours.

Psychoticbreak · 21/12/2023 19:24

I forgot to take them for three days in a row recently and felt no different so I am booking to see the doc again soon.

StBrides · 21/12/2023 19:41

Anxiety can definitely present as irritability. Yanbu, op.
