Hi I just needed some advice regarding sertaline. I started taking sertaline 25mg just over 10 days ago and I didn't know that grapefruit juice or any citrus fruit juice is allowed to take With it as I can't drink plain water it makes me nauseous and I've been swallowing my sertaline with a big 1 litre bottle of orange and mango squash obviously mixed with mineral water and I read online any fruit that belongs to the grapefruit family should be avoided when taking sertaline although I've not had any serious reactions but now I've read about it and it's send me into a complete panic. I like to drink a lot of squash only way I can get water down me if it's mixed with fruit juice. I was wondering if it's okay if I switch to ribena strawberry squash when taking my sertaline as it's not a fruit that belongs to the grapefruit family and it's probably more safe as I can't find much information on google aprat from avoid grapefruit when taking sertaline.

I don’t think (I might be wrong) that orange is in the grapefruit family. It would be things like pomelo. You’re fine with other citrus.

You're fine with orange and mango squash, in fact pure orange juice is listed as one of the liquids you can dissolve sertraline in. Just avoid grapefruit itself.

I take sertraline and I didn't know this. I drink juice (or squash) all the time.
Never grapefruit juice on it's own because that's a sharp taste - but I drink mixed citrus juice.
No one ever told me I shouldn't 🤷

I doubt diluted squash contains enough actual fruit to make a difference.

I'm on sertraline and drink various flavours squashes and I've never had a problem.

Orange juice is fine.
It's not all citrus friuts.

It's totally fine. I was on sertraline for many years and drank squash (including grapefruit barley water...) by the bucketload

Grapefruit is the only fresh juice you have to avoid. It contains an enzyme that affects how quickly the drug will be absorbed.

Lots of seemingly similar fruits can have different enzymes and characteristics. Pineapple for example contains an enzyme that breaks down gelatine so you can only make pineapple jelly if you heat it first to break down the enzyme.

All foods you should avoid are detailed on the patient information leaflet inside the box
