I started 50mg of Sertraline today, I took it 4 hours and I feel totally out of it. Really spaced out, can't focus my eyes properly, jaw clenched and dizzy. Is this normal? I've got two kids to look after and I feel so strange. How long will feeling this spaced out last? I thought it would take a few weeks for side effects?

For me it hit within a few hours, nausea, dizziness etc. Thankfully only lasted a few days and less bad on each of these days. After that and since I have been fine. I’m

50 is a big start dose. Maybe try 25 for a few weeks first. I’m 11 weeks on it and still not at 50, I’m hyper sensitive to medication.

Absolutely typical side effects of ssri medication will go away in about 3 days hang in there it will get better it's been amazing for my depression, anxiety and also cuts down on my nightmares too it's been a godsend for me

I started with 50mg as well. I questioned the dose and GP confirmed 50mg fine as a starting dose.

ColinFuckingRobinson · 16/11/2023 07:24

It's totally normal. My first dose was also 50mg and I felt as you do for a couple of weeks. I didn't feel completely "normal" for about 6 weeks, but it is worth persevering.

Took about 2 weeks for worst symptoms to die down, also started on 50.

TreeHuggerMum1 · 16/11/2023 07:40

I was told to start on 25 and increase when settled. When I tried to get to 50 after a few weeks, I reacted quite badly. Low and slow for some of us. I’m currently on 1 and half of 25mg, so 37 ish.

namechange1986 · 16/11/2023 07:51

@TreeHuggerMum1 It's not a big start dose, it's the normal starting point for an adult. Obvs individual cases may be different, but it's not fair to tell op it's "big".

TreeHuggerMum1 · 16/11/2023 07:55

Ok, fair point. But if she is struggling with 50, I wanted her to know 25 was an option. I’m sorry if I came across badly in any way. Not my intention at all. Only trying to offer advice. Lesson learned.

Morning, I'm on day 7! I take mine at night, within half hour I can feel it, a bit spaced, tight jaw and shoulders, then drowsy. I've slept great for the first time in months this week. My day to day side effects (tense, spaced, gittery, thirsty) have eased mostly now and starting to feel a bit more level.

My anxiety hasn't eased yet but that was to be expected.

Always always take it with a proper drink of water, not just a mouthful. It can cause the most horrible heartburn.

ClemFandangooo · 16/11/2023 18:10

Thanks everyone.

Same thing happened again today and I can only describe it as feeling like I'd just taken MDMA (I've only done it as a student!) but without the happiness. Massive pupils, jaw clenching, really on edge etc.

This evening I feel nauseous and really tired mentally.

I'm taking them for postnatal depression and one of the things I was struggling with was being snappy and irritable to my DP and my older DD. I have been an absolute cow to my DP the last few months and being really snappy about the tiniest things, I don't recognize myself with how bitchy I've been. I also have been diagnosed with postnatal OCD but this evening I've not been bothered by the things that would usually bother me.

Not sure if it can work so soon?

I started taking 50mg of Sertraline a week ago and felt spaced out the first couple of days, soon went away and now I feel miles better. So much calmer and more content. I was losing my temper all the time and I’ve completely calmed down now x

Pinkitydrinkity0 · 16/11/2023 18:23

I started on 50mg too and felt unwell for about a week. Same as you I was a bit out if it, tired and numb. I was also so hot all the time!! But I’ve been on it almost 3 months now and feeling really good 🤗

I found I couldn’t sleep at night if I took it in the evening so take mine in the morning.

SoddingWeddings · 16/11/2023 18:25

Take them an hour or so before bed. And with a good half pint of wagmter ref the heart burn someone else mentioned, mine was hellish. That way you sleep through the early side effects.
