We moved to the US last year with DHs job after he had worked for a company for 8 years. He’s done well there over the years, good pay rises each year and plenty of career progression. He’s always been considered a top performer, top box for every annual review, >10% pay rises every year.
Six months ago his boss started to cut him out of meetings with internal clients, saying he needed to focus on getting the work done and not on the client stuff. There was no specific feedback other than “do more work” and “I see the hours you are putting in and that will be rewarded”. He put pressure on him to deliver more and more and DH had no visibility of what was being promised or communicated to the clients and he (and his team) were working 100 hour weeks to deliver. He burnt out and made a mistake that impacted the users of his product (for about 30 mins before he could fix it) and his boss said it was the final straw and demoted him and brought in another guy from his team to run the team.
This was incredibly stressful as our visa relies on him having a management position in the company which he no longer had. I was pregnant at the time and a few days later I started to spot and then bleed and eventually ended up losing the baby.
At the time he raised the issues with our visa and they said they would look into it. They did and decided it wasn’t valid anymore and they would be letting him go. Only paying for our return flight (none of our moving costs). It cost tens of thousands to move out here and that’s all on us to return now.
They are making him stay on until the end of October to get the project finished because the new guy has had 10+ mistakes like the one who got him fired and is unable to deal with the complexity of the project. It’s unlikely to be finished in October but that’s their problem I guess.
I feel absolutely devastated and numb that we moved our family half way across the world for them to do this. Our visa is not transferable so he cannot get a job at another company. H1B deadline has passed. Our only route to stay here is to buy a company or get a job at a British owned company who may be able to sponsor visa a special visa.
One such company had reached out 4 months before he was fired asking if he would be interested and he’s had 5 interviews there now. We are waiting to hear back (Maybe today as yesterday was a bank holiday here) but I am just falling apart. This might be an invite to a final round, a no, or an offer. I just don’t know what to do with myself and we haven’t told the DC yet as they have settled so well and will be devastated. We don’t have a life in the UK anymore, we would have to move in with parents while he looks for a job and I look for a job. Our eldest is starting secondary school next year and we will miss the deadline for applying.
Im not sure what I’m asking here but would appreciate some hand holding as I feel like I’m about to disintegrate.
