My dil is currently in psychiatric ward under section 2. She is due to go home tomorrow. My son has phoned in distress because she has phoned him screaming and ranting because she has learned he intends to get custody of their child. She is threatening to burn the house down with him and child in it. He is beside himself and I am so worried. Is there anything I can do to prevent her release tomorrow. Surely she is not in a fit state to come home.

No experience whatsoever but could you start with reporting it to the hospital and explaining your concerns? Apologies if you've already done that.

Sounds very difficult OP Flowers

If she's threatening to burn the house down surely it's a clear police situation.
He should call the police and get protection.

Why is she fit to be released in these circumstances?

Id ring the police. She’s threatened to murder your son and your grandchild.

OP if she is currently on a S2 what makes you think she is coming home tomorrow?
Have they said her section is being allowed to lapse or has it been rescinded (cancelled). You need to alert the ward, preferably both verbally and in writing (email) use phrases like serious concerns around risk to others, safeguarding, etc.
And yes worth logging with police in case she does cause trouble on release and your son needs them to attend quickly.

Your son needs to let someone on the ward know what she has said and ask advice about contacting the police.

Thank you for your responses. She is definitely home tomorrow. I'm so worried. What are they thinking of releasing her.
