Could your hormonal birth control cause your depression?

A recent study from France shows that women with an IUD with higher doses of levonorgestrel had significantly more depression. Another study shows that all forms of hormonal contraception increase risk of psychiatric diagnosis and treatment up to 70% on average over all hormonal contraceptives. That is A LOT of women. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27680324/

Do you use hormonal birth control AND have depression or anxiety? I started uncontrollably crying when I was prescribed Yaz but also happened with others.

Association of Hormonal Contraception With Depression - PubMed

Use of hormonal contraception, especially among adolescents, was associated with subsequent use of antidepressants and a first diagnosis of depression, suggesting depression as a potential adverse effect of hormonal contraceptive use.

Yes I had mirena coil and it really impacted
my mental health, to the point I was having suicidal thoughts! Never ever had them before and as soon as it was removed I’ve never had them again.

Absolutely- mini pill definitely made me depressed.

Yes!!!! I was so anxious and had suicidal thoughts on desogestrel mini-pill. Went to doctor, he wanted to put me on sertraline. I didn't want to start that. I decided to come off the pill instead (doctor didn't suggest) and my mood returned to normal.

100%. I believe on of the big glossies - I think Grazia - did a huge exposé on this a few years back. It's one of medicine's big 'secrets'. I was out on a variety of different versions of the pill and nearly lost my partner to my mood swings and depressive moods. It wasn't until he decided just to use condoms that we noticed the correlation.

Yes I was on Yasmin pill for 7 years aged 17-24 and it was like a cloud was lifted the day I came off it. It surprised my sex drive and I had depression (diagnosed) while taking it. It took 2 years for my cycle to normalise afterwards too

I became severely depressed on combined pill, felt almost immediately better when I stopped taking it, not risked hormonal contraceptives since (was 25 years ago). I’m now peri menopausal and wondering if HRT has same effects?
