Antenatal depression

I became pregnant October 2022 and suffered for Hyperemesis gravidarum (severe morning sickness). I was very ill for the first 16 weeks of pregnancy. After this my HG symptoms began to get better . However, my emotional and mental state took a complete hit. I already have a son who was 20 months at the time and all of a sudden I just become distant from him, my husband and my family. Lost interest in everything and couldn't face the day. I felt disconnected from my pregnancy. There was no real reason for me feeling this down as all the scans came back fine. After a week I knew something wasn't write and began to read up online. This was the first time I heard of antenatal depression. I was shocked. I spoke to my family and the GP who prescribed me sertraline at 50mg once a day. First week I was vomiting, had diarrhoea, anxiety through the roof & suicidal thoughts. I use to read up on forums to see if this was normal. In the first 3 weeks I had maybe 3 evenings where I had moments of normality and feeling like my old self. However, I wasn't seeing much of a difference so I asked the doctor to increase it to 100mg after week 5. I didn't get side effects when the dose increased. It was still a slow process and needed to give the medication time. I had ups followed by downs and this went on Until week 9. After week 9 I thankfully had consistently good days and felt back to my old self. My energy came back and i was able to be mama for my toddler again. I know it seems hard but stick at sertraline and give it 8 to 9 weeks to really settle in your system. I have no regrets of taken Anti depressant during my pregnancy as I feel like myself again and looking for ward to the baby. Be patient and have your loved ones around you whilst the medication kicks in. I'm now 35 weeks pregnant and still taking sertraline once daily at 100mg. You'll get through this too.
