Sertraline help..

Shotton1985 · 05/04/2023 20:49

I’ve recently started taking Sertraline and it’s been life changing for the good… and for the embarrassing!

I’m experiencing a lot of flatulence in the evenings. I’m aware that SSRIs kill off the gut bacteria, so I’m taking a probiotic to help combat that. I’m also trying to eat more fibre.

If anyone has a solution or has experienced this I would love to hear thoughts and/or suggestions! Not sure what to do!

Sorry I can’t be of any help with the problem but I’m due to start taking Setraline myself (picked them up yesterday) …… I’m so worried about the potential side effects though as I’ve read so much About how they make you feel worse before you feel better!
how long have you been taking them? Do you mind me asking if you got many other side effects?
i know everyone is different if course!
thanks

Stay off the coffee.

My main side effect is jaw clenching

1981mum1981 · 06/04/2023 06:34

Thanks @thegrain …. How long have you been taking them?

thegrain · 06/04/2023 06:36

Oh years! But I come off them for a few years. This last lot I've been on about 2.5 years for postnatal issues. The first few weeks weren't fun but I genuinely believe they saved my life and my relationship with my child.

Yes I’m suffering with bad anxiety since having my baby , I’m just scared of how they are going to make me feel when I start.
good to hear you found them so helpful though!

Ah ok I won't lie the first few weeks were weird. I felt worse with anxiety. I called the doctor after 3 days though and explained my new symptoms and he said that they suggested the tablets were taking effect and would work well. He prescribed diazepam to get me through a couple of nights but I had to make sure someone was around for baby. I would take them and if you struggle with them call your doctor for advice, I found mine very supportive.

thegrain · 06/04/2023 07:12

Previous times I've been on them I haven't had the initial 2 weeks of struggling but that was for depression only no anxiety.

Jasminejo · 06/04/2023 07:13

I got very lucky

Absolutely no side effects at all from day 1 onwards

now on 100mg and been there for 18 months

WoofWoofBeachLife · 06/04/2023 07:30

I've never had that side effect with them, I'm on 150mg now. What about trying some deflatine tablets to ease the gas. There's nothing worse than tummy wind it's so uncomfortable. I didn't know that about the gut flora thank you for highlighting that. X

@thegrain ….. oh that does sound rough. I’m praying I won’t feel too bad 🙏🏻. Glad you found your doctors very supportive though!
@Jasminejo ….. that’s great to hear you didn’t get any side effects when you started on them though.

Imo it's worth it.

@1981mum1981 if I’m honest it’s what put me off taking them for years. Finally got to the point whereby anything was better than where I was so just threw caution to the wind. Side effects aren’t as bad as some I have read and I’m finding the difference far outweighs the negatives - so much calmer, focused and positive. Also they have stopped completely my urge to nail a bottle of wine and smoke!

First 4/5 days I was like a cat on a hot tin roof - it makes your anxiety worse to start with and if you had any patience to begin with that swiftly goes out the window. But explain to people close to you and tee them up. I had a bit of dry mouth the first 2 days - nothing major. And I’ve had a bit of the old jaw clenching but again nothing bad, I’m just mindful that I might be holding my jaw a bit tighter so stop when I spot it (is nothing really - other people have made out it’s like something from a horror film but then everyone is different!)

Aside from that, it’s the digestive thing I’m working on. Was always a big gut biome advocate, so that is the only thing that has bothered me. I’ve started taking probiotics with every meal (I eat twice a day usually) and if that doesn’t do much, will look at something for digestion. I’m going to the toilet regularly, just in the evening I’m a bit like a wind farm but a friend has told me it passes (no pun intended 🙂).

Hope that helps you. Don’t know where you are with everything but I’m glad I took the leap. I’m in 50mg for reference, my friend is on 125 😳

Thanks so much @Shotton1985 for sharing your experience with them, how long have you been taking them for now? Did it take a few weeks to start feeling the positive effects?
my doctor have ms prescribed a starting does of 50mg.

Shotton1985 · 06/04/2023 08:23

@1981mum1981 I’ve been on them now for a week today. Everyone has said they take 4 weeks to kick in but I have noticed a huge difference and I have read about other people feeling the clarity in the first week. Instagram is a good one to have a mooch - search sertraline and have a look at some of the reels.

Situations that have arisen whereby I would turn to having a drink in the evening without fail (even if I didn’t want to) to help ease how I was feeling; by day 4 completely gone. Feel so much more level and the hard work to keep on an even keel has vanished - is just awesome.

The first few days were hard but ride it out. It will pass. You might be fine! Feel so free to message me, I had so many questions and not many answers so I totally get where you are 🥰
