have just had a funny episode where hearing went, went all hot and cold, heart racing/fluttery, felt like I was going to die .

I’ve had a few times before and told they think it’s panic attacks but not sure .

am alone and scared I’m going to die alone

*that were so bad

LIZS · 11/03/2023 16:32

Do you have underlying anxiety ? Did your gp suggest strategies or therapy to help you? A taxi would get you there sooner or could you find an out of hours gp?

OP, that sounds a lot like a panic attack. However, I've had panic attacks so bad that I've sought emergency attention (really felt like something was medically wrong), so I completely sympathise. I'm sure the paramedics can help you and hopefully provide reassurance.

That’s not what paramedics are for. They are there to provide emergency medical care, not counselling services.

I get called a heartless cow when I say we need to stop this ‘it’s not the severity of the situation, it’s how YOU feel about it that matters’, but it’s true isn’t it? There will be somebody lying on the floor with 2 broken legs who will suffer a needless delay because somebody had a panic attack and ‘needs reassurance’.

Ok im gunna call it ..... you've had these symptoms before, you've been to the doctors, you know these are panic attacks. You are lucid enough to think '' im going to die but will post on mumsnet' .... you clearly are not at deaths door. I very much doubt this is a situation where you need an ambulance.

I agree. Why have you called an ambulance?

Notreadyformenopause · 11/03/2023 16:35

I sometimes get panic attacks where I can't move my legs. They are literally stuck.
My hands go weak and I get tunnel vision.
Everything sounds "far away".

I sympathise with anyone who suffers.
The physical symptoms make me panic more. It's like a vicious circle.

Reinventinganna · 11/03/2023 16:35

I hope that the ambulance comes soon @justwantmymum . I imagine that this is very scary for you and I’m glad that you have people with you.
You have done exactly the right thing by calling an ambulance.

Agreed 100% THIS is a huge part of the delays and long wait times for ambulances, they are for emergencies where it’s life or death that you receive immediate life or limb saving care!

Togoodtobeforgotten · 11/03/2023 16:39

I don't know why people are being so blood y harsh, I used to get palpations I ignored them one day I had to go to the docs and get weighted the nurse noticed I was shaking she done a blood test. I ended up in hospital for 7 days with what was an overactive thyroid with a heart rate of 170, so please do not ever belittle anyone.

Togoodtobeforgotten · 11/03/2023 16:41

In fact they rung an ambulance from the go surgery and they were getting criss because I had to wait for 2 hours for the ambulance. Then I got to hospital and they said we know what's wrong but we are very busy so we will start treatment later till a nurse came into the room and saw I was tacky cardic.

Togoodtobeforgotten · 11/03/2023 16:43

Justwantmymum I hope your ok make sure you ring your mum and she will give you some reassurance.

Because that’s not what is happening here. OP has experience this before (the first time I can absolutely understand an ambulance being called), was presumably investigated and major issues ruled out.

Presumably because she felt like she was dying? It's all very well saying it's just a panic attack, but when you're having one you can really believe you might be dying. There is no logical brain saying hang on, this is just a panic attack. So if you're alone and believe you are dying, calling an ambulance is a reasonable thing to do!

The OP seems to have realised it's now a panic attack so is hopefully coming out of it and can cancel the ambulance. But calling one initially wasn't the terrible thing that people are making it out to be.

That’s what it feels like. Same feeling as when I faint with blood tests etc but begins by heart feeling like it’s stopped then racing very fast, hearing goes like I’m underwater, hot flush and can’t move arms and legs - then stops .

Cardiology and GP said 999 each time as not completely sure that it’s not arrhythmia/VT - am under cardiology/genetics clinic . More than likely it is mental health but no one seems completely sure and wait to get an ultrasound is over a year long just now.

haven’t had an ‘attack’ like this in six months . GP said to me on phone it ‘stronger’ episodes came back it would be 999.

am feeling a bit calmer now . Bit more coherent . It’s every time I move, heart goes a bit haywire .

am on NHS lists x 3 for help, been told the therapy I’ve been assessed for won’t start until spring 2025 but have been offered other help meant to start before summer this year . Meantime trying to middle through but am not leaving house or exercising at all as so scared all the time . Brain can’t rationalise anything .

halls security rang 999 back who said just to sit tight .

And this, is one reason why I witnessed a 67 year old gentleman, suffering a stroke. Wait 3 hours for an ambulance to transport him to hospital last night.

If you're posting on MN, and have had similar symptoms for a couple of weeks, you aren't dying. You CERTAINLY don't need an ambulance. Absolute joke.

Winterisalmostover · 11/03/2023 16:46

SunshineGeorgie · 11/03/2023 15:53

@Winterisalmostover so you would call s as n ambulance to save on Taxi fares?

Op has managed to get to a different part of the building so isn't exactly 'collapsing'

I certainly would not, but in some areas it is very difficult to access emergency care. Someone on a basic state pension could not afford a taxi at £60 one way and some have no local support system. The ambulance has to travel 25 miles just to get to our village. OP is obviously in a different category to an elderly person who lives miles from an A&E and could be about to go into cardiac arrest.

Frustrated567 · 11/03/2023 16:47

Advice please:
My husband left his stressful job recently due to his mental health. He’s now got a much lower paid/stress-free job. But he keeps saying how stressed he is about money. I have increased my hours from part time to full time which is making me more stressed.
I’m increasingly frustrated with him that he keeps complaining about lack of money but doesn’t do anything about it.
Should I be more sympathetic? Or am I right to feel frustrated and feel like he could find a better paid job now his mental health has improved?

About to go into cardiac arrest? She's walking around the building and posting on mumsnet!

Crumpetdisappointment · 11/03/2023 16:50

do you have friends or family to be with you op

LIZS · 11/03/2023 16:50

Some areas offer online or phone therapy on NHS on self referral basis.

This. OP you don’t need an ambulance, maybe you did in the thick of the attack but you seem much improved. Please phone back and cancel it, then make your own way to hospital. Ambulances aren’t a ‘right’ and they’re not there to provide ‘reassurance’.

Frustrated567 · 11/03/2023 16:50

I thought I had! Sorry!

How do you know what's happening here? I could get palpations and it could be the start of a thyroid storm. You have absolutely no idea. Perhaps it could be an allergic reaction to something.
