Hi, this sounds so sad, I'm married with four children and close to my mother. Other than the children my mother and spouse I'm so lonely I have no friends. I recently got laid off and the staff I worked with were much younger than me. Previous to this I never worked in years due to rasing a family.
How does someone aged 38 even make friends
I don't want to just do old people stuff I want to have nights out and shop and do lunches and play dates and gossip and share problems but I have no one and no idea where to even start
Will I just be lonely forever?

You won't be lonely forever but friends you've not yet met aren't going to come knocking on your door. You need to put yourself out there in the world. There's no magic solutions. Join clubs/groups/try new hobbies/sports etc. Do things that interest you even if you've never done it before. Talk to people. Eventually you'll meet a like-minded person with room in their life for a new friend. It won't happen without effort from you though. People are attracted to happy people, not desperate needy ones, so go out into the world and start living a life you enjoy by yourself, then the friends will come. Keep yourself open to new opportunities, eg go to events where you don't know anyone except the person who invited you.

I think you need to start by allocating some time specifically for you. Rather than running a house or parenting or working, allocate time for you such as park run or a spin class or yoga or art or whatever. Somewhere you will meet people who like the same things you do.

Look at Meetup for groups of like-minded women in your area. Can you get involved with one of the schools?

If you don't reserve time for you, somehow it never happens.
