If you've been diagnosed as an adult with ADD/ADHD, has medication helped?

Hello lovely Mumsnetters. I'm pretty sure I have ADD (the dreamy version, not sure if I have the right term). I'm wondering if there is any point in seeing a doctor for diagnosis and treatment? Have any of you gone that route and found it useful? If so, I'd be grateful if you could advise what medication you use.

And if you haven't done the medication thing - has anything helped you with your ADD?

Feeling so stuck right now and wondering the best way to go. TIA for any advice /experience.

Sorry I have nothing to offer by way of advice, but would be interested to know as I think my DS (21) has ADD. He's been waiting almost 3 years to see someone about it ☹️

Yes, it helps me be more productive. Quiets the chat in my head.

I’m quite attached to have two brains talking at the same time but would like to know if it helps.

I was diagnosed a few years ago at 40.
They did help with focus but I decided that I didn't want to be on meds for health reasons.
I also experienced anxiety when they wore off.

Medication has helped me immensely (I started it in my late thirties) but I do miss aspects of my ‘old self’ too auch as what posted @MonkeyMindAllOverAround

I tried to take it sporadically which is what my teenagers do, but I kept getting side effects whereas taking it continuously gives no side effects at all.

It will depend on the person and the medication. My children take Concerta and only take it on school or revision days. I take Elvanse but find I need to take it every day.

I have always had anxiety but nothing has ever helped. ADHD medication makes my mind and body calm and I can regulate my emotions so much better.

I read the book Healing ADD which pointed towards using L tyrosine for ADD. This has helped plus laying off sugar.
i'm lucky as I don't need to work full time and this enabled me to have less day to day stress.
