SSRI and prenatal vitamins

Hi everyone,

I take 20mg Citalopram (antidepressant) and I’m looking to start taking the Pregnacare pre-conception vitamins with the plan of trying for a baby in a few months.

Does anyone know if it’s OK to take prenatal vitamins with SSRIs? Are there any contraindications? My GP just said ‘most multivitamins are fine with SSRIs’ which wasn’t all that reassuring!

Thanks in advance!

You would do best to ask a pharmacist.

Hi Op, it's fine to take them together your Citalopram they are just vitamins. I took them together for over a year when TTC.

Have you thought about what you'll do about your SSRIs during pregnancy? I came off Citalopram after a positive test and got quite unwell, I just stopped immediately which is the worst approach.

I've since switched to Sertraline and have been advised to stay on it throughout any other pregnancies. I was actually advised to switch from Citalopram to Sertraline for that reason. Tbh that's the most important thing to discuss with your GP. Good luck TTC!

Thanks, beachshellshome! My GP has said I’m safe to stay on 20mg Citalopram for pregnancy. I do feel nervous taking it as there are a lot of stories of birth defects on SSRIs but I think it’s important to me to be stable and happy during my pregnancy. Citalopram has changed my life in so many positive ways (and completely got rid of my agoraphobia!) so I’m keen to stay on it as long as it’s safe for the baby.
