Take the beta blockers. They are wonderful things and will block the electrical impulses to make your heart race. My heart rate was 240 and they prescribed them to me in A&E. I have another issue with my heart that causes it that’s being sorted. Honestly, get it checked out and take the tablets!

Mischance · 05/01/2023 17:18

Take the beta blockers - they will slow your heart rate and help with anxiety symptoms.

Anxiety and fast heart rate can create a vicious circle. The more anxious you are, the faster your heart rate; the faster your heart rate, the more anxious you become.

The treatment you have been given will break that cycle and help you to get back to some peace.

I take them all the time - because I have occasional atrial fibrillation. I have no side effects and am glad of them.

Wishing1988 · 06/01/2023 07:15

Take them! They're a godsend for the physical symptoms and they work right away with no side effects.
You can take them when you need them. They're not like other medication that you have to take everyday for them to work. One or two tablets will help (whatever your doctor suggests)

Although if I take them at night I can't sleep. If I take them in the daytime my sleep is as it usually is.

Krakenwakes · 06/01/2023 07:19

Why wouldn’t you take your prescribed beta blockers? They are provided to help you. Did you pick them up from the pharmacy?

BobaTea · 31/01/2023 21:43

@Wishing1988 , do you take beta blocker on a as needed basis?

I was prescribed beta blocker for palpitations but only take one if they are bad. I don't want to take them regularly.

Wishing1988 · 01/02/2023 07:58

Yeah I take them as needed. Sometimes I ended up taking them most days but other times it's more sporadic depending on how bad my anxiety is. I'm on ADs atm so I'm finding my anxiety and physical symptoms easier to manage through breathing and grounding techniques. Beta blockers aren't addictive and I would recommend them highly.
Although, if I take them at night I can't sleep. But lying in bed calm and awake is preferable to lying in bed panicking, full of adrenaline and awake!

BobaTea · 01/02/2023 22:01

@Wishing1988 , it's my first time taking beta blocker. I took them daily for the first week then stopped. Now I take them as required. Like you some days I take them quite regularly. I take them for my palpitations not anxiety

But what I'm worrying about is that with beta blocker if you want to stop you have to taper down. So is it safe to start and stop when taken on as needed basis?

Wishing1988 · 02/02/2023 12:13

Yeah you don't have to taper down or anything like that. They're a one off thing.
I'm certain of this although I must say I'm not a doctor so for max reassurance check in with your GP! But they're not like other medication that builds up and has withdrawals.

You are definitely not the only person feeling like this! Look at all the previous comments.

You are stuck in a vicious circle of your anxiety causing a racing heart and the racing heart increasing your anxiety. Your doctor has prescribed you a medication to break the cycle.

Right now anxiety has taken hold in your brain and it's stopping you from thinking things through. You have been seen at a&e where they confirmed there's nothing wrong with your heart. Can you see that your doctor wouldn't have given you medication that could hurt you or make you worse? Would it be fair to give the beta blockers a go for a couple of days and see if they help? Then if they don't help you can go back to your doctor and ask to try other medication.

icecreamisforwintertoo · 03/02/2023 20:35

I understand, I’ve been anxious my whole
life too but only just started getting heart palpitations the last year or so.
im much older than you and I think mine is linked to perimenopause so I am trying to get a doctors appointment and get onto hrt but it’s easier said than done.
it’s a horrible feeling and I can totally relate to how it just takes over your life and you
feel like you can’t cope with anything. I have no experience of beta blockers but have friends who have taken them. I think taking medication is a scary prospect if you haven’t done it before but worth a try to see if it makes a difference.
good luck to you, take care of yourself - you won’t feel like this forever

Awatts21 · 03/02/2023 20:54

Thank you guys it really helps me knowing it’s not only me with this racing heart I’m gunna take 1 of my beater blockers tomorrow and see what happens to me fingers crossed I don’t drop dead arghhhhj so scared 😳

Just take one FFS. Billions on people take beta (it's not beater) blockers every day. They're not heroin. They're designed to do exactly what you need. Or don't you want to feel better.

Wishing1988 · 03/02/2023 21:17

I was the same and had beta blockers in the cupboard for over a year before taking them. But the way I saw it was that I already felt anxious and awful - so either they'll help and then good for me or they don't and I continue to feel crap like I did before! but at least I'll know! Good luck tomorrow but I'd strongly recommend taking one, they really do help! And they're a super commonly medication and are not like SSRIs which have side effects, withdrawals etc.

BobaTea · 03/02/2023 21:29

@Awatts21 do you get skipped beats often? Since January I've been getting them constantly every day and night. I'm finding it very difficult to cope. I take beta blocker when it's very bad which is most days.

icecreamisforwintertoo · 03/02/2023 22:51

That’s good @Awatts21 let us know how you get on

Awatts21 · 04/02/2023 00:01

Yeah I always get a skipped beat nearly every day we’ll I think it’s a skipped beat I feel like a strange jump and a pulling sensation and more like a bubble feeling in my throat but my hearts just out of control all together x

BETA Blockers will definitely not make things worse.
If they've been prescribed you need to take them.

TheShellBeach · 04/02/2023 13:17

Good morning, OP.
How are you feeling today?
Have you taken a beta blocker?

MargaritaRita · 04/02/2023 13:26

HI OP, take some deep breaths, you poor thing you are obviously in a very anxious state.

Beta blockers are very safe. I take them for Atrial Fibrillation and they slow your heart rate brilliantly. They block adrenaline which is the thing that causes heart racing amongst other things. Miracle drug if you ask me! I have zero side effects also.

Take what you have been prescribed and see. They won't increase your fear and anxiety although I can totally understand your terror of taking them. Half the world is taking them now. Did you ever wonder how opera singers and actors can appear so calm? Lots of them take beta blockers before going on stage!

They are not addictive either. I wonder also if you should ask your doctor about SSRI anti depressants. They are wonderful for anxiety and are not addictive either.

Hope you feel better soon. Take the tablets TODAY, don't wait any longer, that's just making you more anxious, although it's easy for me to say.
