Sertraline dose increase - insomnia?

PlinkPlonkFizz · 30/11/2022 01:55

Please help - I'm having insomnia since my psychiatrist increased my Sertraline from 100mg to 150mg for OCD I've been on 150mg over a week and I'm struggling to go asleep (nearly 2am now) every night - and I was bad enough before. Plus I feel like my heart is racing and I feel constantly anxious about nothing. Do any of you know if this is likely to settle down?

What time of day do you take your sertraline?

What time of day do you take your sertraline?

First thing in the morning.

I was just wondering if you take them later in the day. I took mine in the evening at one point and had awful insomnia which stopped when I started taking them in the morning. Often side effects do settle down after a few weeks so if you can it might be worth persevering. I was given sleeping pills when I had trouble sleeping - Promethazine - which were helpful. Could you ask if you can be prescribed sleeping pills for a week or two?

On the other hand it may be that the dose is too high for you. I get the jitters when my sertraline needs reducing (have had to increase and decrease the dose many times over the years). Do you have a review appointment booked? Sorry I’m not being much help, I do know how horrible insomnia is.

Thanks @ThePomegranate that's a good approach. I'll give it 2 more weeks and if things haven't improved I'll get my psychiatrist to review. Promethazine might help. I'm due a review before Christmas. Thanks so much for your reply.

Poor you. These things can take a few weeks to settle down but I would contact your psychiatrist if you can and tell him/her about the insomnia and other symptoms as they may want to manage that sooner. I hope you’re getting some other support for your OCD - good quality CBT can make a huge difference. I can pm you some info about it in relation to OCD if helpful (sorry, I know that’s not what you asked for!). I hope you get shot of the insomnia.

I'm on a lower dose than you, but when I first started taking Sertraline I couldn't get to sleep. It did settle down, so hopefully you'll be ok.

How are you doing today @PlinkPlonkFizz? How was your sleep last night? I hope you are managing to get some rest.

Thanks, that would be great if you could PM me that.

@Piffle11 fingers crossed, glad it settled for you.

@ThePomegranate I was so tired but not able to sleep that I took a Xanax. It worked but I don't like to do that too regularly.
