Hi,

I've been taking 20mg citalopram for now 16 days. About day 5 I started to feel worse than ever but after a few days I started to feel better and had about 4 or 5 days completely anxiety free. Yesterday (day 15) i noticed anxiety creeping back in and I've felt mildly anxious since. Nothing like how I felt initially but it is noticeable. Is it common for you to be a bit up and down until things settle? I know my Dr told me it can take 4-6 weeks to start working. Anyone had any experience of this? Thanks

I usually respond quickly to it but everyone is different. Stick with it to see if it evens out in a couple of weeks. I'm actually on 40mg so you still have room to manoeuvre if needed. It's a wonder drug for me, hopefully you too.

@hairypaws thank you I'm hoping they've just not fully kicked in yet!

My experience so far (I’m on day 9) was:

Days 1 and 2 - heightened anxiety, worse than what I’d experienced before, tiredness
Days 3 and 4 - feeling jittery rather than anxious, nausea, diarrhoea
Day 5 - diarrhoea but jittery feeling gone
Days 6,7 and 8 - tiredness, sleeping a lot (but could be because I also had a cold), gastro issues largely gone, reduced anxiety

Have also noticed a bit of increased sweating since taking it. Not sure how common that is. Going to carry on and see what happens. When I took fluoxetine, I had hardly any side effects but I also didn’t find it made a big difference to my mood. I’m hoping that because I’m feeling the effects with this one, it’s doing something.

Yep, it's normal. I think it took nearly a year for me to feel completely stable. I used to get v bad anxiety just before my period and that still broke through for a while, could that be a thing for you?

cookies92 · 20/10/2022 15:48

@Ethelfromnumber73 I've been ovulating so could be that as I get physical pains with that? And must be throwing the hormones off.

Yep, used to get that too.

cookies92 · 20/10/2022 15:57

@Ethelfromnumber73 so basically anxiety every couple weeks? 😂 I'm so annoyed with myself had 4 years anxiety free then it came back with an absolute vengeance!

It will get better and better with the citalopram. How old are you? It can be a sign of perimenopause and if so, HRT can help

Puncturedbicycle85 · 20/10/2022 16:36

Oh yeah, sorry, should have recognised the username. Hope things get easier.

cookies92 · 20/10/2022 18:22

@Ethelfromnumber73 oh god I hope not, I just turned 30 😂

Hello
I started taking it (20mg) a month ago. I was lucky as I felt calmer right away, but the nausea was AWFUL. It didn't let up at all for the whole month. A few days ago I asked gp if I could take it in the evening instead and she said that was fine. The nausea has now gone. I'm still having panic attacks though.
Hope you feel the benefits soon x

Devo1818 · 21/10/2022 20:59

I took ¹0mg for 2 weeks, then up to 20mg which made it smoother although it was still a tough start. Give it a chance to settle down. I'm on 30mg now and it is a bit of a wonder drug for me too I must say.

Mumc1984 · 07/11/2022 14:31

Hi can I ask how you are feeling now? I’ve been on 20mg citalopram for 18 months and was feeling fantastic up until 2 weeks ago I missed one dose mixed with a night of alcohol and had a relapse not I’ve gone up to 30mg and feeling pretty crappy

cookies92 · 08/11/2022 08:03

@Mumc1984 hi so I'm now 5 weeks in. For the last few days I've felt midly anxious. If I make myself busy it helps but it's annoying as I had a few weeks feeling great. I'm not as bad as I was though! You're maybe feeling crap with the increase and experiencing the side effects? I had them pretty bad when I started.

Well I literally felt fantasist for the last 6 months on 20mg then two weeks ago I missed once tablet then started feeling so anxious and depressed I again so I upped my dose to 30mg which is probably another reason I feel crappy but I did start feeling it again anyway just don’t understand why after missing one dose I felt like I was relapsing from my pnd x

Mumc1984 · 08/11/2022 11:23

Do you know how I put a post in here and target a certain audience for pnd and citalopram/ands?
