Hi all

I am going to start taking 50mg Sertraline for postnatal anxiety tomorrow so it will be day 1.

For those that have taken it does 50mg actually work as well as 100mg?

Apologies only just noticed there is a post already for Sertraline

Hi, yes it can do. I noticed a difference after my second child when I was put on 50mg of sertraline and taken off a higher dose of another antidepressant. Give it at least 5 or 6 weeks though to really get in your system.

Hope it helps and you feel better soon and you can enjoy being a mummy 🙂

I took 50mg and I swear I woke the next morning as if my brain was calm. Honestly the best thing I've ever done.

WorriedandScared93 · 05/10/2022 18:04

Thank you so much @dollydewdrop85

When you took it did you avoid driving at all while you got use to the side affects? I heard it can make you dizzy?

I had to increase from 50mg to 100mg per day because it wasn't having much of an effect.

Stroopwaffle5000 · 05/10/2022 18:07

I don't get any side effects btw

feathermucker · 05/10/2022 18:12

It may make you feel a little odd at first, but it's worth persevering with it in most cases I've read or know about.

Ive been on 200mg for a year now and it's been life changing for me. Doesn't work for everybody of course, as is the nature of medicine sometimes, but it worked for me.

Strawberrypicnic · 05/10/2022 18:24

I've been on 50mg for anxiety and severe panic attacks for over a year and I'm very happy with the results, although it did make me feel very odd for a couple of months in the beginning. It would never be advised to start from scratch on 100mg anyway - the dose is supposed to be increased gradually to give your brain and body time to adjust. So start with 50 and see how you go (and if you're like me, you may find it's enough.) Good luck :)

anniewaitsevenlonger · 05/10/2022 18:25

It's amazing. Wish I had known years earlier. Only thing I would say is taking 50mg straight away gave me quite a lot of side effects and I had to do 25 for a couple of weeks then up to 50. My doctor always recommended 25 to start I was just impatient and regretted being stupid. Did you doctor say to go straight to 50? It's strong stuff. Even missing 2 days in a row I feel the effects.

kenadams86 · 05/10/2022 18:28

50mg will definitely have an effect, you can always increase the dose after a few weeks.

My advice would be to ride it out for a few weeks because the side effects can make you feel quite spaced out and tired as you are adjusting to it.

Onekidnoclue · 05/10/2022 18:38

Good luck OP. It’s glorious stuff! Honestly 50mg is a bit of a punchy start. I’d expect 25mg (as a total non expert, based purely on my experience and that of friends which is a small sample). I didn’t feel dizzy at all. Side effects were increased hunger and crap sex drive, neither impacted my driving! Can stop sleep though so I’ve always taken mine first thing. Good luck. X

dollydewdrop85 · 05/10/2022 19:13

@WorriedandScared93 I can't remember it affecting my driving.. but I'm kind of hardened to them I think after 16 years 🙄 I feel more effects if I forget one or two. See how you go, everyone's different :) good luck x

Jennywren1975 · 05/10/2022 19:25

I've been taking 50 mg for 3 weeks now. Don't notice any difference in how I'm feeling. It's still early days and my Dr did say it takes about 4 weeks to feel the benefits.

I have had no side effects which is great. Not sleeping, but I was like this before I started them.

Plummer88 · 05/10/2022 21:48

I started on 50mg for four weeks then increased to 100mg. Still not sure how I’m feeling. I’ve found they make me feel tired and numb.

WorriedandScared93 · 05/10/2022 21:58

Thank you so much everyone.

WorriedandScared93 · 05/10/2022 21:59

@Plummer88 I believe they are working then! To me, numb is better than feeling anxious all the time. I am totally wriggled with it since having my daughter. I think the numbness is the 'dealing' with life? Tiredness I think goes though?!

OP posts:
Plummer88 · 05/10/2022 22:12

I’m not sure. I mean I’m not getting the lows but I’m also not getting the highs? Just feel like I’m swimming through mud and not getting anywhere. I can’t cry (I have done one since I started taking them) and I just don’t know how I feel. People keep asking me and I just don’t know.

I also take 40mg propranolol three times a day, been on that for awhile.

WorriedandScared93 · 06/10/2022 22:24

Day one (took my first 50mg at 4pm). So far I've had yawning a lot and jaw grinding?!

OP posts:
WorriedandScared93 · 07/10/2022 08:23

Is it possible to feel better after just taking one?!... I have some of the side affects but I do feel mentally in a bit of a better place already or is it too early? I took my first one at 4pm last night

OP posts:
WorriedandScared93 · 07/10/2022 08:23

Yesterday I should say!!

I’ve taken 50mg for a year but I do think it needs upping now and I have an appointment on 10th October. I did feel a little better straight away but it may be the placebo effect. It is life changing though so stick with it! I did feel a bit sick at first and I didn’t sleep well the first night but the only side effect that continued was the teeth grinding which still continues a year later. It’s so weird, I wonder why that is?

WorriedandScared93 · 10/10/2022 17:58

Already feeling a lot better. The brain clutter seems to have gone but still getting my anxiety slightly so will stick with it

OP posts:
Onekidnoclue · 26/10/2022 16:50

I’m so pleased for you! Hope the improvements continue

hsamantha · 26/10/2022 20:39

@WorriedandScared93

How are you feeling now op x

WorriedandScared93 · 01/11/2022 16:50

Thanks @hsamantha

Not feeling 100% better. I am going to ask to go on 100mg. I have a follow up appointment with my gp tomorrow. Still having the anxiety and intrusive thoughts.
