Mirtazapine sleepy as hell

I've been switched from Sertraline to Mertazapine. Not sure if I agree with it but the doctor said Sertraline isn't working and this is the next option. I was straggling to sleep as I have a lot of stress at the moment- I don't usually lose sleep so apparently this is the way to go.

I had my first dose of 15mg last night, slept for eight hours but I am EXHAUSTED. I'm at work and I am barely functioning. I could happily go to sleep under my desk right now..

Please say this wears off as I definitely cannot do this everyday. I can barely keep my eyes open!

Ime it hits you hard the first few days you take it, but you get used to it very quickly. I usually feel a lot better by day 3

I had to stop it . Sorry not what you
wamt to hear but I felt
hungover on it and had brain fog.
Ate like a pig too. It made me
so hungry I felt permanently famished.

see how you go. Horses for courses and all
that. You may find it works a treat once it settles down into your system

Good luck

@wishesandkisses how are you getting on with the mirtazapine? I've started it recently and am also very tired on it. I did 2 weeks at 15mg and now had a week at 30mg. I have had some brighter spots but hoping for more positive days as I'm still quite anxious and depressed.

Hi - just wanted to add that my initial sleepiness and brain fog wore off after a week. I'm now on 45mg since July and I'm sleeping better, less anxious and the initial appetite increase has subsided.
I was really concerned about the side effects to start off with. I'd been on paroxetine for 30 years and did a slow taper and swap. Hope that helps.

Can I ask when increasing your dose from 15 mg to 22.5 does it still help with sleep?

SameKeyThough · 11/10/2022 18:57

I increased from 15mg to 30mg and it still knocks me out. I take it about 9.30pm and I'm out for the count in about half an hour.

That’s great to hear SameKeyThough
Hope your mood begins to improve soon too.

SoyMarina · 02/12/2022 09:32

How are you all doing now?
I finally increased my dose to 30 mg over a week ago now and feel it’s much more effective for depression and anxiety. I still have down days though.
My sleep is good and my appetite unchanged but I could definitely do with eating less as always has been the case with or without mirtazapine.

@SoyMarina I'm glad you feel your increased dose is helping. I'm currently switching from citalopram to sertraline (in addition to the mirtazipine). I don't think the mirtazapine is doing much except helping with sleep as the withdrawal/start up of the other antidepressants has been hell. The plan is that once I'm firmly established on the sertraline I will try and come off the mirtazapine (not looking forward to that).
