Anyone not gained weight on Sertraline?

Finally went to the GP today after months and months of my therapist encouraging me to go. He prescribed me Sertraline start on 25 go up to 50 in a couple of weeks. My main concern was weight gain which I told him he assured me he would prescribe me one that doesn't cause weight gain. Then later in the appointment he mentioned Sertraline and confirmed with me that it doesn't usually cause weight gain and I get home and reading through the leaflet only to read one of the common side affects is increased weight.

Has anyone taken it and not gained? If you have gained weight how much?

Does anyone know of anything that doesn't make you gain?
I've got a history of eating disorders and a lot bigger than I want to be at the moment my BMI is currently over weight which I am working on but I just can not force myself to take medication that will make me gain weight.

I’ve been taking it (50mg) since December and I haven’t gained any weight on it at all. My eating habits haven’t changed either. It’s been really helpful for me, I was prescribed it for very bad PMS.

I haven't gained weight on sertraline. It made sweet things too sickly for me so I actually ate less.

Notnowbarnaby · 08/07/2022 12:47

I haven’t gained, I’ve lost because I felt better enough to exercise regularly.

itzybitzy · 08/07/2022 12:48

I didn't. I started on it about 9 months ago. I actually lost weight as I wasn't comfort eating as much.

I lost weight on sertraline- a very welcome side effect!

Kenwouldmixitup · 08/07/2022 12:54

Yep. Lost weight - not comfort eating.

Most medications that have weight gain as a side effect don’t actually directly cause the weight gain.

They tend to affect appetite, so people are hungrier or crave certain food groups.

Which means that if you’re already trying to lose weight and you find you’re hungrier or craving sweet stuff or carbs... as long as you make sure it fits into whatever weight loss diet you’re doing, you’ll still lose weight.

It upset my stomach & caused nausea
So lost weight on it

I haven't gained weight, the opposite actually. Prob as I can see clearly now and not comfort eating like pp's have mentioned.
It's made a massive improvement to my life ovee the last few months I have to say.

Thanks everyone so much for taking the time to reply. So maybe not a definite that I will gain weight. I've just been reading the obesity code which talked about some medications that make you gain weight aren't because of what you eat you can be eating the same or even less but since they medication itself gives a rise in insulin levels you can gain weight no matter what.

I gained a lot of weight on it but I think it was because it changed my appetite rather than the the actually medication causing the weight gain. I was eating more. I would still recommend it, it genuinely saved my life. I came off after three years and the weight has slowly come off.

Most don’t do that though, yes there are a couple.

But with most it’s actually eating that causes the weight gain.

Sorry but I put on 5st on sertraline - just after I'd flipping lost 5st! Not taking any medication now and busy losing the weight again.

moofolk · 08/07/2022 13:24

I'm lighter than I was before starting sertraline.

Better mood = better habits.

Definitelysometime · 08/07/2022 13:29

1.5 stone on in almost two years for me Sad

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/07/2022 13:41

I have gained weight a bit in the sense that when you're anxious you tend to not eat very well so when you take it you probably feel hungrier. Flip side is you feel like doing more exercise. That's my experience anyway.
