Hi guys, I got prescribed sertraline 3 days ago. I'm really struggling with them.. I'm on 50mg for anxiety and depression and also being tested for BPD. My first 3 days on them have been horrible, My symptoms have been:
Terrible nausea
No appetite
NO SLEEP!!
Tired but can't sleep for the life of me
Feeling wired
Jaw clenching
Shaking
For the first 2 days I got 3 hours sleep all together, doctor prescribed me sleeping tablets today so hopefully can sleep. But I'm really struggling with the side effects to the point i don't really wanna take them anymore... is anyone else on them? If so did the side effects fade? Are they worth it in the end?😫😫

They don’t suit everyone.
I felt very ill on Sertraline and changed to Fluoxetine (Prozac).
Fluoxetine made me feel very spaced out for a few weeks at first but it didn’t last past then.
I couldn’t stand the nausea I felt with Sertraline.

I had fluoxetine from since I was 15 but they didn't work for me, and the doctor said these are the only ones I have because you can't conceive on them, and I've been trying for over 2 years with no luck. Sertraline honestly do make me feel so drugged up🤮

I am currently on sertraline, the first 2 weeks were rough I won't lie, I had the insomnia and nausea and feeling spaced out. But after those couple weeks everything settled down and I felt much better, however I do have to take my tablet before 7am else I struggle to sleep. Hold in the OP but if you don't feel it's working go to your gp xx

Queenfreak · 29/06/2022 21:23

I found the side effects of sertraline lessened massively after about 5 days, 2 weeks and I was back to normal.
If I increase my dosage I get them again for a few days.

Queenfreak · 29/06/2022 21:24

Oh, I now take my sertraline at bedtime! Doesn't effect my sleep at all now

Couldn’t take it. The jaw clenching was awful. I switched to efexor which was very effective for me.

Kenwouldmixitup · 29/06/2022 21:27

I started on 25mg. No unmanageable side effects. Then up to 50mg a week later.

My jaw clench is so bad too!! Sometimes my teeth chatter (if that's the word) like I'm really cold aswell I look like a fool 😂

Hopefully after a week or so the side affects will die down for you, maybe ask the gp to cut down the dose and then work back up? X

Useranon1 · 29/06/2022 21:54

I love mine. I had awful jaw clenching the first few weeks but it soon went.

@TryingForBaby2 there's a thread just like this about Sertraline every week or so, you might find that the easiest way to find others in your situation.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 29/06/2022 22:15

I'm on 25mg of sertraline. Was on a lot more a few years ago then came off then then due to lockdown back on and the first few days this time were horrendous but I was assured it would calm down and it did.

imaworrier · 29/06/2022 22:51

I was on Sertaline, the first two weeks I felt so sick. That started to go away and I felt really good mentally but it was making me go to the toilet about four times a day and I couldn't leave the house. I'm now on Venlaflaxine, day three of it and it's made my anxiety so much worse!

TheBigPeach · 29/06/2022 23:27

Started them last week and stopped after 3 days. I felt like my heart was squeezing on and off. Spoke to the gp about it and she said I was right to stop but didn’t offer any other alternatives just suggested I go for therapy. No nausea

kenadams86 · 29/06/2022 23:29

I felt like a zombie for the first couple of weeks on sertraline. I swapped from taking them in the morning to taking them at bedtime and that made a huge difference. Stick with them a bit longer id say. You generally need to give it 6 weeks but I can I understand how you are feeling it's not great at first

I've tried taking them morning and night but no matter when I take them I just can't sleep x

I'm currently taking 150mg daily and I don't suffer with any side effects unless I miss a couple of doses and then I get horrendous withdrawal symptoms. I do question whether it has effected libido however! Persevere with them, they've made such a difference for me!

kimfox · 29/06/2022 23:36

I'm surprised you've been put straight onto 50mg but I've little experience of anti depressants. DD has started on 25mg and was told to take only half a tablet for the first four days. She was simultaneously given melatonin for sleep. She said the first week or so she felt very tired & a bit nauseous in the mornings after taking it, but is much better / feeling more normal now. Being monitored with a few to upping dose in September depending on how her anxiety is.

HotPenguin · 29/06/2022 23:45

I would give it a couple of weeks. I felt awful the first couple of days, and totally spaced out the first week, but then I started to feel pretty normal. I still get a little jaw clenchy at times, but it's worth it, as it's really helped me.

KurriKawari · 29/06/2022 23:55

I could stop crying when I first took it and kept having panic attacks for no reason. But I think taking it has been the best thing ever for me. Wish I'd been prescribed it years ago.

TheFormidableMrsC · 30/06/2022 09:21

I'd try and give it a week or two. My DD had some side effects that only lasted a few days and she ploughed through and it's been life changing for her.

AtMyWitsEnd2 · 10/07/2022 16:25

@TryingForBaby2 How is everything now, has the side effects calmed down? Im on day 3 of sertraline today and i feel wired and shaky, like im high. Not liking it much.

Worridoncemore · 11/07/2022 07:51

I had to come off after 4 weeks as I suddenly came out in huge purple bruises and ended up in A&E having blood tests which were OK thankfully. It was a terrifying experience which made the health anxiety it was supposed to be treating even worse. Rest assured it's a rare side effect though. Now taking nothing and awaiting CBT.
