I feel like some form of psychotherapy would be very helpful for me. I have various issues that I am dealing with that go round in my head. Time to start working through them...

But every time I start looking online for a therapist I draw a blank. People are always recommended to use the Find a Therapist search functions on the websites of the professional bodies. If I go on BACP there are 107 therapists within 10 miles of my postcode, which a) makes it difficult to narrow down b) makes me think that if there are so many that are qualified enough for BACP, does that really count for much?

A friend is having worthwhile therapy but via Zoom as they live too far away. I really don't think online therapy will work for me. I hate video calls / all the Zoom meetings that have sprung up since Covid.

Is there anyone here who can recommend a therapist on the beds/herts/bucks borders area? Roughly in the area between Hemel, Chesham, Aylesbury, Leighton Buzzard.

Any so called therapist ion video is a total waste of time.
Party of therapy is building a relationship with the therapists and they with you.
If neither of you can see body language which is a vital part of communication it is worthless.
I would also make sure a see a psychiatrist not a counsellor as there is a world of difference.
A psychiatrist will try to suggest solutions a counsellor will usually just "how does that make you feel" when the answer is obvious or you would not be there.

@standoctor You mean a psychologist presumably. Psychiatrists are doctors who primarily diagnose mental health conditions and manage medication interventions.

It’s also not true that you can’t access effective therapy on Zoom. I have never met my therapist (a psychologist) in person and she’s been transformative. I’ve had face to face counselling & really don’t see any difference.

OP, can you ask around locally? Most therapists will do a free intro call to check that you get along so look into that as well.

Thanks everyone

It's hard to ask around locally because I don't like to give the impression that I'm not coping (I'm sure a therapist will encourage me to dig into that a bit more...)

I have asked a couple of friends who I know have ongoing themselves. One of them is financially completely out of my reach (and seems to charge around twice the going rate) and the other is the one on Zoom.

@Pianofish I'm about to PM you. Thanks
