Anxiety and irregular heartbeat

Going through a rough patch at the moment. I’ve had anxiety and panic attacks in the past, but the last few weeks I’ve had all the useful anxiety symptoms, but the irregular heartbeat is new and it’s terrifying me.

I phoned 111 last week and went to the out of hours GP and they did an ECG. It was normal at the time, but the irregular heartbeat comes and goes. I know it’s linked to the anxiety as I can almost feel the surge of adrenaline and then the irregular heartbeat. It makes me worry that I’m going to drop dead and it’s such a vicious cycle as it makes my anxiety much worse.

Anyone else had an irregular heartbeat and it’s all been fine? Feeling really down right now 😢

See your GP, you can be prescribed something for it. Beta-blockers will help with palpitations.

Palpitations are horrible and unsettling, but they really are harmless when caused by anxiety. How old are you, op?

I've just been diagnosed with Hypertension due to anxiety.
Sometimes the palpitations frighten me they feel very strong!
What's your BP like?

I’m turning 40 this week! I’ve been on a beta blocker for the last 10 years as I got hypertension during pregnancy and have been on them ever since. They are usually good at keeping my blood pressure under control. I’ve been on labetolol. The doctor has just prescribed a new one though - bisoprolol. Haven’t started taking it yet as I’m nervous about trying something new while I feel like this!

Thank you so much for your replies by the way. It’s really comforting to know there are other people who understand how horrible this is (although I’m sorry you also feel this way!)

I've been taking Amlodipine and so far so good, nothing has helped like this tbh

Does it feel like one sudden irregular beat? Or lots of irregular beats in a row? I get the one, sudden pounding beat which feels really out of sync with the rest. It's called an ectopic heartbeat and it's very common with anxiety, and (I've been told) completely harmless. Unfortunately the more you pay attention to your heartbeat, the worse it feels.
