Does anybody have any experience of thus medicine and how it makes.you feel?

I've been asked.to take it for anxiety by my doctor.

Took one at 7am, all good. Felt a bit funny at lunh, so took another one at 1pm. Thought that would be log enough in-between.

Felt funny all afternoon, dizzy, breathless. Into the evening I still didn't feel right; had struggled to.walk home.after work. 9pm.i took my resting heart rate. 49bpm!! Haven't taken one since as I don't want my heart rate to go that low!!

Has this happened to anyone else?

What dose? DD takes 40mg every evening, and occasionally one in day time.

It doesn’t sound like Propanolol suits you. It doesn’t work for everyone… my doctor warned me that if I felt off, dizzy, or lethargic to stop taking them immediately. They are a beta blocker, primarily; and they are used for cardiac issues and high blood pressure as well as to stop the physical manifestations of anxiety.

I think I’d ask to try something else.

Peoniesandcream · 22/05/2022 16:56

I was on propranolol for panic attacks for several years, it's a beta blocker so it decreases heart rate and blood pressure, you may need to adjust the dose if its making them too low and making you dizzy etc.

gamerchick · 22/05/2022 16:57

It did take a couple of weeks to get used to them for me. But once I was they were champion. The tight chest bit was a pain though.

girlmom21 · 22/05/2022 16:57

It's a beta blocker. It's supposed to lower your heart rate. I didn't like how it made me feel.

DeskInUse · 22/05/2022 16:58

I'm on 40 mg when needed. I used to take it every day but my anxiety is more circumstance so I take when needed, it never made me feel dizzy and my resting heart rate would be about 80. As another pp said, it's a beta blocker, but your heart rate shouldn't be that low

mommaof1 · 22/05/2022 16:59

Hello, I've been on propanolol for about 6 years now, I take 20mg a day for anxiety I'm on a low dose and it does help, I don't have any symptoms like yours and think you should speak to GP might need a lower dose

GizmoIsSoFluffy · 22/05/2022 17:38

It's 40mg to take up to 3 times a day.
I've been on 100mg sertraline for over 2 years, but currently can't control my.anxiety. I've had the proprananol for over year, to help in extreme circumstances, but I rarely take it.
But at the moment my anxiety is completely.out of control, hence I was told to take the proprananol to give myself a break from it. But 49bpm, that's not right surely. Normally my resting heart rate is 60bpm. I'm mid 40s.

Anyone ever had a low heart rate and continued to take it?

Yes. That isn't an alarming heart rate you've posted. Just get up and move around.

sanityisamyth · 22/05/2022 21:06

How many times a day were you supposed to take it? Did your doctor tell you to take it 6 hourly?

IstayedForTheFeminism · 22/05/2022 21:09

Going from 0 to 40mg sounds like a big leap. Can you do that on propranolol? I know you can't on some meds. I started on 10mg twice per day and increased as I needed to.

Veryverycalmnow · 22/05/2022 21:13

It took a few days for me to get used to them.
I was not a fan of the side effects but they ease off after a few days and the positives for me were massively worth it. Feel so much better.

Utini · 22/05/2022 21:14

Yes you can I think. I discussed it as an option for migraine prevention with a GP and she said she would generally start people on 80mg, although I think that was a slow release version so I guess may be a bit different. I haven't tried it yet but think I'm going to have to soon.

DPotter · 22/05/2022 21:15

40mg three times a day sounds awfully large does to me.

Just checked on the NHS website and it says it's usually prescribed as 40mg once a day, rising to max of 3 times a day.
www.nhs.uk/medicines/propranolol/

You will ned to scroll down a bit to see the dosage information

They've worked for me for migraines. That's why I was originally prescribed them. 10mg twice per day. That didn't work so so upped to 4mg 2x per day.

Then I started getting awful anxiety so dr recommended the 3rd dose.

PaolaNeri · 22/05/2022 21:36

I had to have an ECG after 2 weeks of being put on it and despite feeling fine my heart rate was also in low 40's. I was told to stop immediately and re booked for another ECG a week later. I would call your GP and ask for a review. I'm sure there is something else they can give you.

RamSyder · 22/05/2022 21:47

I’m on 10mg up to 3 times a day, no side effects

Culebra · 22/05/2022 22:59

Dose sounds too high for you. I've taken 10mg in the past. Also, I don't think asthmatics are supposed to take this type of beta blocker: if that applies to you it could account for the breathlessness.

ClocksGoingBackwards · 22/05/2022 23:06

40mgs would knock me out, I’m not surprised it made you feel like that. 10mg is enough to stop the physical symptoms of anxiety if I take it as soon as the feelings start, and I might then take another 10 an hour later. I only take them when I need them now. I wouldn’t take more than 20mg unless it was time for bed because I know it would make me very woozy and sleepy.

Perplexed0522 · 22/05/2022 23:12

I’m prescribed 10mg twice a day got my anxiety.

Every now and then, once a week or so on average, I may take one tablet ad hoc if I seem to be having a moment where I feel particularly anxious.

Im general though, just taking my 10mg tablet twice w day is enough to keep me calm.
