Anti Depressants

My husband has been on anti depressants for many years and has recently said he's started to feel very flat. I have seen other posts on this website before where others have reported this, so I hope (sadly) that it is common and that it's quite normal. He's on 30mg but when he spoke with his doctor to say he felt very flat, no emotions, no feelings towards anyone in our family including me, the doctor just said to up his prescription to 40mg.
Obviously the doctor knows best but I thought anti depressants were to make you more level/not have as many highs and lows - so why if he's already feeling flat would they up the dosage? Does anyone know how long it'll take for the upped dosage to kick in please?
TIA

Has he had any counselling or CBT in the past ?
Sounds like he needs to look at going back to the beginning, so increase the AD’s and have some counselling or CBT.

And I’d say a couple of weeks for it to kick in.

Thank you for your reply. Yes he's had CBT and therapy and re starting the therapy. Is he likely to still feel numb though with increased AD? He's wanting to start feeling things again other than being numb/flat, so thought the AD was counter productive. Obviously I'm not a doctor though and I guess she knows best, although sadly she saw him for all of 3 minutes and ushered him out.

He shouldn’t feel numb, it should lift as the drug kicks in. Give it time to work, but do other things like a walk in the sunshine, and keep up the therapy.

Thank you. We did wonder if he'd grown resistant almost to his existing dosage. He has a review booked in for 6 weeks time so I guess we'll see then what the doctor suggests. I hope he starts to feel again soon, it's very scary for him.
