Can anyone recommend a counsellor for an adult adopted as a child?

Someone I know well is seeking a counsellor for someone who can help with their life issues (mostly relationship stuff but not totally) which are probably caused by their lack of having dealt with the impact of being adopted as a child. They may wish to seek out their birth parents in the future but for now they that want to come to terms with their ‘stuff’ which probably includes having been adopted. Any recommendations? PAC doesn’t seem to be taking private people and local council provided services just aren’t quite what they are looking for. They are willing to pay.

There are unfortunately legal issues here - to give counselling for adoption issues, counsellors have to be registered with Ofsted as an adoption support agency. Most private counsellors aren’t (partly because the required training is hard to come by), so it would be illegal for them to work with your friend - which unfortunately will make it much harder to find someone.

The best places to help direct your friend to a suitable counselling service are Banardo’s (www.barnardos.org.uk/adopt/link-adoption-support-service), PAC-UK (www.pac-uk.org/our-services/adopted-adults/) and AdoptionUK (www.adoptionuk.org/where-can-adopted-adults-go-to-find-support).

My apologies, I overlooked in your OP that PAC were already unable to help.

Your friend can also try www.counselling-directory.org.uk/, as they will be able to filter for appropriately qualified and registered adoption counsellors.

I think I may have found someone for them from that directory @MajesticWol. Wow. Let’s hope they have availability!
