Trazodone?

Has anyone got any experience of trazodone please? I’m on mirtazipine 15mg which I’ve found amazing for sleep and help with anxiety and depression but it has made me gain an enormous amount of weight. After tackling my alcoholism (I’m 2 years sober in April) I finally feel ready to tackle my weight. I’m eating healthily and exercising but I’m hungry ALL THE TIME! Which to be honest I was before I started the healthy lifestyle (trying not to consider it a diet and more of a long term thing as I have about 5 stone to lose) and I think it’s the Mirtazipine as I’m also craving carbs constantly. I’d really like to find an anti depressant that would help me sleep still (insomnia contributes enormously to my mental health deteriorating) but I’m not constantly starving on as I just don’t think I can maintain a healthy eating approach while the carbs are calling! I’ve been reading about different anti depressants and it seems like trazodone could be a good fit. If anyone has any experience I’d really like to hear it please.

Hi, I've been on trazodone for a few months. Personally I've not noticed a huge difference on it, but no negative side effects either. I don't find that it makes me noticeably sleepy in the way that other meds have done so wouldn't have too high expectations about it helping your insomnia, although it might be its just a more subtle effect that I'm not picking up on, as I do take it straight before bed anyway! Probably worth a go though if you're getting negative side effects from the AD you're on. If you say to the doctor you are looking for something to help with insomnia then they should be able to work out which one would be the best fit for you.

Thanks for the reply, I’ve got a phone consultation with my doctor on the 11th so will see what he says! Thank you 😊

How did you get on? I've just switched from mirtazapine to trazadone.

Hi sorry I’ve only just seen your reply @spartacusflapjack . Well for the first week it was great, noticeably less sleepy than on mirtazipine but was still sleeping a good 6-8 hours then all of a sudden it started giving me a racing heartbeat. I would lay in bed all night with my heart just absolutely racing so I stopped taking it. Couldn’t get an appointment even over the phone with my doctor for two weeks so by the time I spoke to him I’d been off all antidepressants for two weeks and decided to carry on and see how I go. So far so good, I’ve had a couple of low periods but we have had a huge amount of stress at home so that’s to be expected. I seem to go through waves of sleeping and not sleeping, a couple of weeks ago I was sleeping great but now I’m not. My doctor prescribed melatonin so I take one of those if I can’t drop off which give me a good 6-8 hours. So all in all trazodone wasn’t for me but I’m glad I tried it as ultimately coming off it gave me the confidence to come off antidepressants all together and I think that’s been right for me.
