Anti depressants : do you drink alcohol?

I’m not a huge drinker, enjoy a glass or two of wine at the weekend. But since starting escitalopram I haven’t had any as everything I read states you shouldn’t mix with alcohol.

Is this right?
What are your experiences?

I didn’t realise I would have to give up the one thing that I have that gives me any pleasure 😔

I'm taking venlafaxine and still have a couple of glasses of red at the weekend. Your pharmacist would be able to advise if you are worried though.

I am on 20mg of Citalopram and have a couple of glasses of wine once a week roughly. The only medical advice that I've read says it can make you more tired.

Devo1818 · 29/01/2022 19:53

For escitalopram, the NHS website says:

You can drink alcohol while taking escitalopram, but it may make you feel sleepy.
It might be best to stop drinking alcohol until you see how the medicine makes you feel.

I take sertraline and although I'm not a good drinker at the best of times I think the sertraline makes me worse

Ijustneedtosleep21 · 29/01/2022 19:57

I've recently started Sertraline for anxiety, drank a bit too much wine last weekend and was wide awake for 3 hours in the middle of the night with crippling anxiety!

dillydallydollydaydream7 · 29/01/2022 20:01

I've been on sertraline for about 3 weeks and have one glass of something on a weekend, no problems up to now

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 29/01/2022 21:52

And hangovers are the pits. I gave alcohol up on 27th December and the anxiety was something else. So I'd prefer not to drink now.

Sherrystrull · 29/01/2022 21:53

I'm on sertraline and haven't been drinking at all as I'm scared of the effects.

wendz86 · 30/01/2022 17:43

I’m on sertraline and have had a couple of drinks a few times with no issues .

prettyLittlefool · 30/01/2022 17:52

Sertraline here and drink a fair bit. No effect whatsoever.

Suzi888 · 30/01/2022 17:53

My friends do, I think it makes it hit you harder though. Take it easy and see how you go.

XenoBitch · 30/01/2022 19:40

All my psych meds say no alcohol, but I drink anyway.

Frollop · 30/01/2022 20:53

I'm a social drinker. I still drink a few glasses but thats not often.

Notlostjustexploring · 30/01/2022 21:23

I drink occasionally on citalopram but the hangovers are absolutely dreadful and certain drinks leave me with panic attack worthy levels of anxiety.

Roadtripconcept · 30/01/2022 21:32

I was told that I could have an occasional drink but to remember that alcohol is actually a depressant .
I don't drink any more . When I did drink I used to wake up in the night with terrible anxiety with or without antidepressants.
