Health anxiety would you pay for a health screen?

So I have health anxiety which has really peaked since the start of the pandemic.
I have recently found a private health screening which will test for
Blood pressure and pulse
Full urine laboratory test
Electrocardiogram (ECG)
To assess liver and kidney function
Breathing and heart sounds assessed
Full blood count
Biochemistry
Full lipid profile including cholesterol
Thyroid blood test if over 40 years
Breast self examination taught

Its £280.
I'm really considering it for my own peace of mind and well being and think it will be a good thing to have done.
DH thinks it's a waste of money and says at 34 there's no need to have a health check.
WWYD?
I can afford it if I budget but it's a lot of money. But is it for peace of mind? I think it's quite reasonable on the other hand.
I just don't know 😂🤦🏻‍♀️
Interested to hear if anyone has had a health screening check done and if it's worth it.
Thanks and sorry for waffling 😂

I think the money would be better spent on counselling for health anxiety. Sorry for being blunt...

My friend suffered with health anxiety.
It was awful tbh so you have my sympathy.

Counselling worked for him.
He is now a lot better and a totally different person.
Thanks

I considered something like this after DS as I had bad health anxiety. I actually chose not to in the end as the tiniest thing would of set me off ten fold. Took my DP a long time to convince me though. I paid for private counselling sessions instead which helped so so much.

Personally, I wouldn't do this if.

If there's even one slight abnormality on the results (one value that's slightly above or below normal) would you fixate on this?

Also, this seems expensive for what it is.

The tests offered can't pick up every illness; you'd want at least some sort of CT scan / MRI too. Not that you should get this without any symptoms, but without this there are lots of medical issues that could be missed.

You can check your blood pressure for free at your GP (ours has a machine in reception).

Honestly this sounds like a pretty basic health check that’s unlikely to find anything abnormal, even if something were wrong.

This sort of thing just makes anxiety worse, by giving a feeling of false reassurance that doesn’t last. You’d be better getting some help with your anxiety, and a chat with a sensible GP about your health generally and whether you have any specific issues that need investigating.

As a cbt therapist I'd say your money would be better off going on cbt to learn to manage your anxiety. The reassurance from the health test would only be short term, I suspect you'd then feel the need to get checked again, for "just in case they nissed something" type thoughts. Good luck xx

I really wouldn't as waiting for test results is horrendous (even if you don't have health anxiety), plus, as someone already said, what If one of the results was a bit off, how would you cope with that? I'm waiting for blood test results and am bricking it in case there's anything found (even though I have no symptoms of any of the stuff they're testing for, but I do have health anxiety!)

Libraryghost · 12/01/2022 21:22

It won't work because in 6 months time you will be convinced they need to run the tests again or there will be another disease you think you need a test for. It is a never ending cycle because you can never be certain you are not going to become ill - none of us can. You can never have peace of mind, life is uncertain. All the test will do is cause you to fixate more on your health concerns. The real health issue you have now is anxiety, that is what you need to concentrate on.
