Did coming off social media help your mental health?

I have bad anxiety, health anxiety and very low spells. Always suffered but lots more since the pandemic.

Did deleting your social media help this or could it make things worse?

I am debating to try and set a goal of no social media for the next year and see if it helps. It does annoy me tbh seeing people posting loads of cr*p about covid and opinions etc. Feel like I end up scrolling through it for hours a day by the end of the day and it’s such a waste…

Just want to know if anyone felt better for coming off?

Thanks

Better. This was ore Covid times though.

Coming off FB helped massively.
Insta took over for a while but, once I noticed colleagues posting pics of group outings, conveniently only posting pics that I wasn’t in, I came off that too.

I do loiter on MN a fair bit bit. I should delete it. It can be quite awful on here at times & it is such a waste of time.

For mindless entertainment, I scroll through TikTok at the moment. Not the dancing people or the Covid posts, usually house restorations, animal rescues & lighthearted stuff that makes me feel better, rather than worse, for being on there. Otherwise I would read a book or watch a film if I was just sitting. Give it a try for a month and see how you feel. If things feel better then aim for the year.

Yes
Deleting Facebook 2.5 years ago was the best thing I've done for my mental health. It's still shit, but less so than it was.

Absolutely do it! Delete any news apps too!
Good luck 😃

Yes, I think it did. I just had a small account with a hundred or so followers on there, but even that felt like too much after a while. Also, I just found it was so full of people ranting about a whole load of nothing. I don't think it was a total stress or drain on me, but just utterly pointless.

I should come off MN too really, but i like the community here (most of the time)

Absolutely yes! Highly recommended. Probably saved my life tbh

Awful stuff. If you are like me, you scroll and scroll looking for something interesting or amusing and never find it, or if you do, it’s not satisfying and you keep scrolling. Journaling, doodling, reading, thinking..it destroys all these.
