I was diagnosed with cyclothymia in 2012. Saw a psychiatrist as an outpatient and was prescribed medication. Had one relapse in about 2017 where I was off work for seven weeks. Now I am currently going through another relapse. I was off work for seven weeks. Came back for four and am now off again. Since August I’ve been back and fourth to the doctors. I can’t seem to stabilise my mood and when I’m depressed I’ve begun to self harm and have feelings of suicide. After seeing the doctor today they have referred me to the mental health team. What I would like to know is what happens next and what’s the time scale? Do they call me and then arrange an appointment with a psychiatrist? How long until they call me? I did ask the GP some of these questions but she didn’t seem to give a definitive answer plus my head was all over the place. If anyone can offer their experience I’d appreciate it.

They should contact you within 2 weeks for a phone assessment then you will be sent an appointment for psychiatrist or psychologist depending on their assessment.

My experience wasn't great I'm afraid. My so called urgent referral took 2 years and I still got no therapy or treatment other than antidepressants.

I ended up getting a private therapist who is amazing but I had a bit of a dip about a month ago and attempted suicide. Needless to say, I failed. Apparently I have a very impressive tolerance for codeine.

I was kept in for 2 days then discharged and told that the community mental health team would be in touch the next day. They still haven't.
