Anxiety and SSRIs

Does anyone else get anxious on SSRIs? I have GAD and am feeling pretty down right now. I can't do SSRIs as they make my anxiety worse, not better even though they make me less depressed.

I've tried all the major SSRIs and amitriptyline but everything makes my anxiety worse. Anyone else had this problem and if so, what worked for you?

Hi @mentalhealthmedication,

I'm interested in this too. I currently take Sertraline and Mirtazapine but I'm still very anxious. I've found that improving my diet has helped things but I'm exploring other things too.

Have you tried lavender capsules and have you had testing for nutritional deficiencies? I also supplement with B12 and magnesium.

Therapy has done the most for me tbh. Propranolol helps the physical symptoms of anxiety but its been the counselling that helped me the most.

I take: vit B complex, magnesium, pro biotic etc but I don't take lavender capsules. Haven't tried those, do you recommend any brand? I do take propranolol twice a day as well. I haven't been tested for nutritional deficiencies but my blood tests are good for vitamins.

SSRI's don't make me anxious so much as trigger panic and panic attacks. I can't go outside on them as I'm so anxious. I was on Duloxetine for five years and could barely leave the house on it.

That's interesting @mentalhealthmedication, do you know why SSRI's have this effect on you? I have propranolol but don't use it as it felt like another medication that I could do without. But I do still have a lot of anxiety.

I'm taking New Roots Lavender Oil and I take it late afternoon as find I tend to feel worse around teatime.

I’m on 10mg Escitalopram, also known as Lexapro. Have you tried it, OP? it is a SSRI, but it really works for my GAD. Sertraline did nothing for me, this is the only other one type I’ve tried.

I agree that a good diet, exercise and vitamins are very helpful, but I need a medication ( at the moment at least) to really function well and lead a happy life.
