Imaginary person...in adulthood

So my friends fiance is a good guy. But he has told her stories about his 2 friends whom he valued the most in the past ... my friend told me that he talks with full emotion while he speaks about them... like thier names, details etc...

Then one day my friend asked if she could meet them and he suddenly tells her they are both dead. He tells that he was heart broken and he even cried truly while telling about their demise.

However, there are no pics of them ( it happened in 2010 so obviously there must be some pics?)... none if his other friends know about the duo. Not even his parents know.

My friend was thinking to get engaged to him but now she fears all this was a imaginary stiry by him. If it is... would that mean he has a mental ailment that needs to be treated?

I think its more likely that he never got over their deaths, right? Shouldn't be too hard to find out surely.

It's a comforting thing. A way to deal with a traumatic event and the trauma that he feels from losing them.
