My OH has experienced anxiety and depression on and off for years. He's never tried medication as he has bad memories of his brother taking them (his brother is now addicted to certain prescribed drugs). After a long stint of bad insomnia he has been prescribed 15mg of mirtazipine.

He took the first one last night and has felt pretty bad today. I'm trying to support him and reassure him that it will pass (I take sertraline so am aware of the side effects of AD's).He said he's felt very zombie like and in a fog and is worrying that it will change him as a person.

What can I do to be of more support? Is this normal for this drug? He's thinking to half the tablet for a while...

Hi, I know that it is one of the more sedating ones which may help the insomnia. I think side effects would wear off maybe with time.

I found it worked really well for me. Despite even getting side effects with paracetamol I take this with very few issues. It means I sleep 80% of the nights instead of about 2%. That's been so good for my mental health and my diet. I eat rubbish when I'm extremely tired and that makes everything worse.

It takes a while to get into the system, so stick with it.

I was on 15mg, but I break it in half, it knocks me out.

Not sure if this will be a helpful comment but my dh tried this and couldn’t get on with it at all. It just made him sleepy and he put on lots of weight. He switched to citalopram 30mg and hasn’t looked back. It’s been life changing for him. (He has bipolar and severe depressive episodes, he couldn’t work before the Citalopram). So what I’m saying is if it doesn’t work out do try something else.

I found it worked very well but I went from a size 14 to an 18 in 12 months. Thankfully, the weight is melting off now I've stopped taking it.

I have never experienced hunger like it. I wanted chocolate and I HATE chocolate. Very weird.

My husband was nearly run over by a car and fell asleep standing. Doctor didn’t mention that sort of side effects. He was like a zombie and put on weight. Hated it
