Mental health nurse going to call me regarding anxiety.

I contacted my GP surgery asking to speak to my doctor regarding anxiety and treatment options. The receptionist said that a mental health nurse will contact me in 2 weeks. I’m at the point where I think I need medication, is that within a mental health nurses capacity?

I can already feel I’m going to sob my heart out to the nurse, this has been building for years but just recently become increasingly worse and affected my ability to function normally.

What kind of things will they ask me over the phone? I’m past the point of CBT and anxiety awareness courses, I want to discuss medication treatment options.

Anyone have any experience? Thanks

You poor thing.

In my area they have something called IAPT where you're called for an assessment but I got the impression they weren't qualified. I also sobbed to them down the phone.

Two weeks is a long time to wait when you feel terrible. Do you have anyone close to you who can support you before then? Xx

Thanks for your reply, it’s a hard situation to be in, sorry you’ve been through it too!

I’ve been dealing with it since I was 14, now 26, a couple break downs in between! It’s strange but I’ve felt a wave of acceptance rush over me that this is the end of all these years of worry and it stops within the near future. That phone call to even say about anxiety has been years and months of worry, years in the making to get to that point! But it’s done. I hope the phone call gets me the help I need. I’ll muddle through the next two weeks, sob my heart out and get the help I’ve been needing for years 🙂

A lot of the mental health nurses attached to GP surgeries now can also sign off things like meds. It is definitely worth having a chat and seeing what they can do.
