This is my first time posting.

Im wondering how everyone found counselling?
I have self referred over past and recent events which I can't seem to get over. Did you find counselling helped deal with your feelings?

Really worried about how it's going to go and whether it's actually going to be any help

Thanks

I've had loads of therapy, starting with 'counselling', through to clinical psychologists. It feels worse before it feels better. Scope out your counsellor/therapist, they all have their own areas of interest. Work on something relevant to you that they're interested in. I had five months talking about my mum with one therapist. Take it one thing at a time, don't expect all your problems to fade away at once. I remember a 'lightbulb moment'... it can happen like that.

Thanks for replying.

It's through the nhs so I have no idea who it is and think it's only going to be 6 sessions.
I'm not feeling hopeful that it's going to be enough. I will see how I get on with them and I might have to do do private sessions

I did the NHS 6 sessions and then went private. 6 sessions wasn't even enough to trust them.

My counsellor now, I see privately and I find it helps a lot.

All mine was from nhs or charities. So. Six sessions won't change the world but they will help. Don't expect to see the full benefit until it's had a year to bed in.
