How do you get 'signed off' from work?

Can anyone tell me what the process is for getting what used to be known as 'signed off' from work with a MH issue, like stress?

Do you self-certify for up to 5 days? What if you know you need a couple of weeks off the decompress?

Thanks.

If you speak to a doctor, they can sign you off for a period of weeks.

I literally phoned my GP and said “I’ll be honest; I’m hoping you can sign me off for a while”. I explained a bit about what was going on and she then asked how long I wanted off. She was lovely and reassuring about the situation.

Speak to your GP and tell them you don’t feel well enough to go to work and ask them to sign you off. You can self certify for a week. But you need a dr line thereafter.

I hope you feel better soon

GPs sign people off with reasons like anxiety, stress, work related stress etc

Thanks everyone.

I thought you had to self-certify first.

In case anyone is wondering about my calm musing, it's not for me, it's for a family member.
