Stopping Sertraline overnight

Have been on this for 15 months - on 100mg/day dose which apparently is high - want to come off it - will I be mad just to stop completely?

Yes, probably. I stopped that dose by accident for two weeks, and spent a fortnight with horrific vertigo, dizziness and nausea. I had omitted to put them into my daily pill pots.

To come off them properly, I split the 100mg in half and alternated 100/50 mg dose for a fortnight, then stayed on 50mg for a month, then alternated 50/0 dose for another month. Only because my GP surgery ignored all my emails to try to get 50 or 25mg pills, but it worked and I've been off them and stable for over a year.

I stopped suddenly on much less than that. Terrible low mood, my mood fell off a cliff, I was angry, irritable and couldn't sleep. Not to mention the electric shock feeling every time I moved. I wouldn't do it on that dose, to be honest.

Seesawmummadaw · 19/05/2021 13:52

What’s the rush?

needhelpformydp · 19/05/2021 13:52

Following as I want to stop too

riotlady · 19/05/2021 13:54

Please talk to your doctor and taper off then slowly, the side effects of stopping suddenly are not pleasant

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 19/05/2021 13:58

You may well have unpleasant side effects if you stop suddenly. I reduced over a period of weeks.

Super helpful thx all - I'm just inpatient!! X

I had to do it super slow. From 200mg which made me feel so awful.
I ended up splitting the dose 50mg morning and evening for a week and then 50mg for a month. Then swapped over to a diff one

My dc did this & was bedbound unable to move for weeks, they came close to being sectioned. Don’t do it, it’s an evil drug to come off.

Doyoumind · 19/05/2021 23:06

I was on it for less time and came off a lower dose very, very slowly, tapering over months and still I felt the impact of stopping. Overnight would be terrible.

Bluey18 · 19/05/2021 23:08

Please consult your doctor. My DP missed a few days in a row a couple of times, he could barely leave bed once the effects kicked in. Shakes, vertigo, severe mood drop and nerve issues (as in feelings of trapped nerves). Also flu like symptoms like fever and sweats on top of that.

Please don't stop in one go, but best of luck xx

feckwit · 19/05/2021 23:10

I did, ten days ago. Actually felt much better for it and then after 8 days started fainting, feeling sick etc. Went back on, feel better. Hate these MH drugs!

Keepitonthedownlow · 19/05/2021 23:11

I've been slowly weaning from 100mg to now 12.5mg. I 100% don't advise you to stop overnight it is likely to be problematic.

BanditoShipman · 19/05/2021 23:12

Do not do this! You will prob feel better for a few days then fall off a cliff mentally. Two of my friends did this and both had to be signed off work for a month.

Take half dose for about 3 or 4 weeks then half again for 3 or 4 weeks etc etc. Or better yet speak to your dr.

Lotty32 · 20/05/2021 14:18

Many thx - will definitely not be stopping overnight! Most useful! X
