Online therapy/counselling?

Does anyone have any recommendations for this sort of thing please?

Ideally I'd like to talk to a professional via email or web chat messaging about trauma experienced as a child/young adult that is beginning to affect my life now in the present day. What I don't want is CBT - tried it in the past and it's just not helpful for my particular problems.

Also, can online therapists diagnose mental health problems such as PTSD?

I think you would probably be looking at a appointment face to face to be honest with you as in person not via zoom .

Hi OP. You could try counselling-directory.org.uk. You can filter the type of therapies you’d like (so you can avoid CBT) and also filter by price etc. Most therapists will be working online at the moment.

However I’m not sure that you’d be able to to trauma work over email or web chat. I know the thought of discussing it on the phone or on Zoom is really daunting but a good therapist will wait until you’re ready, and they don’t need you to go through every detail of what’s happened, unless you want to. It’s more about finding tools for coping. Something that I’ve done before for very difficult topics is send an email writing out what is hard to say and then we discuss at next session (arranged this prior with therapist).

Therapists/ counsellors generally aren’t qualified to diagnose. That would usually happen via a psychiatrist referral from your GP.

Hope this helps and good luck Smile

Counsellors generally don't diagnose people with illnesses as it's not the way most of them work.

Look on Counselling Directory or Psychology Today websites, a lot are working remotely right now but I don't know how many do webchat as opposed to phone or zoom.

How old are you OP? Childline do online messaging if you are youngish. Also the Samaritans do online chat now.

I don’t know of many counsellors who offer online chat.

Your GP could probably diagnose you with PTSD.

Good luck xx
