It isn't licensed as an antidepressant in the UK. Its not a case of won't, its can't.

I've just found another thread on this and people have been prescribed by a psychiatrist. I'm currently waiting to discuss this with a psychiatrist so fingers crossed!

I have. You have to get it privately. I tried it in combination with sertraline and it didn't do much for me I'm afraid but I know some people have had excellent results with it.

misskick · 19/04/2021 11:16

If you don't mind me asking how long did you try it for? I'm currently on sertraline but seem to knock my sex drive. I've heard such good feedback about it. I'm speaking to psychiatrist Thursday if it's a no I will try the private route.

I can't remember; 6 weeks maybe. I think I had some side effects so my psych changed it.

The correct name is Bupropion. The licensing thing is a bit of a red herring. The reason it's not licensed for depression in the UK is because the manufacturer never applied for a licence to treat that condition. They only applied for licensing as a smoking cessation aid. Bupropion is widely prescribed as an antidepressant in the USA, so there is a clear precedent for it. I had no luck going to a private psychiatrist in the UK to get it - I came away with a prescription of quetiapine, on which I gained weight and suffered several episodes of thrombophlebitis. I would be interested to know which private psychiatrist prescribes Bupropion.

Well I spoke to the psychiatrist regarding medication and he explained it's not licensed for depression in the uk. But can be used for sexual disfunction, in my case loss off libido. So will be staying on the setraline but having Wellbutrin for the sexual disfunction. I have struggled for years so really hope this will help along side counselling.

Good for you!

misskick · 23/04/2021 20:51

Hope someone comes along with some advice on a private psychiatrist op!

Let us know how you get on with it. Very interested.

YorkiePanda · 23/04/2021 21:05

It’s used in the UK off label for ADHD, but not as far as I know for anxiety/depression

misskick · 25/04/2021 15:36

No it is licensed for depression in America and from what I've read is w wonder drug. Really hoping that is the case!

I had it prescribed to me by a private psychiatrist for depression in the UK.

Iamnotmad · 25/04/2021 16:48

@Cozytoesandtoast00 where in UK are you? Private psychiatrist I saw in Manchester wouldn't prescribe it

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 29/04/2021 22:00

Northamptonshire

My partner was prescribed it on the NHS but he's under mental health services rather than a GP. Mind you, he's been on it less than a year and twice it's been unavailable due to supply issues, one time for weeks. That was fun.

Iamnotmad · 30/04/2021 06:40

@PainAgain has it helped?

misskick · 02/05/2021 20:13

Finally have my tablets, day 2. I was a bit taken back when I picked them up as she told me I may become more anxious off them. Trying to keep positive thoughts!
