What to expect?

I was on sertraline but it didn't agree with me, no change in mental health but a whole host of side effects. The doc has suggested I try these. Due to take my first one on Saturday.

I've been prescribed ad's for clinical depression, anxiety and OCD thinking. Starting dose of 10mg to see if I can tolerate it, reviewed in three weeks to up dose depending on side effects.

Hi @Dementedswan I'm in the same situation

Imagineit · 25/03/2021 20:05

I was also on sertraline but the side effects were horrendous and I've had citalopram before me it worked great for me. Want to buddy up and get through this together? I have generalised anxiety disorder and I've been off work for a while now. Hoping this med is the one.

BoomTastic1 · 25/03/2021 20:06

I'm on 10mg. Main side effects were stomach upset in the first few days and headaches and feeling tired for six weeks then it was okay. The first day I took it I felt relief, it has honestly been great.

Personally I'd recommend taking it before bed as it has kicked in when you wake up, it makes getting up for me so much easier.

Dementedswan · 25/03/2021 20:11

@Imagineit I remember you from the sertraline thread. How are you?

@BoomTastic1 my doc has recommended I take it in the morning so I feel the effects through the day.

@Imagineit I would love a buddy!! I'm feeling very cut off from society at the moment. A friendly voice would be great .

Been on Citalopram for depression for about 1 year (never medicated before), started on 10mg and felt improvement but went up to 20mg where I am now and feel like myself again on it.

Haven't noticed any side effects before but haven't been on other meds to compare.

I hope it does what you need it to OP (:

PollyPocket245 · 25/03/2021 21:11

I’m on citalopram and had no side effects! I was horrendous on all the others. But I would take before bed because I believe it can make some people tired. Good luck!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/03/2021 21:13

I'm on Citalopram. 20 mg for the last 3 years. It makes me feel normal and it enables me to function

Dementedswan · 25/03/2021 21:18

Thank you! I'm going to start taking it on Saturday. One more day of homeschool to get through x

Same. Sertaline did nothing, now on 40mg of citalopram. Couple of weeks in. Making me feel like I can function again.

Dcadmam001 · 25/03/2021 21:35

I take it before bed as made me tired.

Dementedswan · 25/03/2021 22:01

I'd love to feel tired and stop my brain from whirring ridiculous stories! X

I’m on week 3, week one was 10 mg, week 2 20mg and this is my first day of 30mg. I’ve been on it before and am desperately wanting it to take away these feelings. I have awful anxiety just now, coupled with depression I am not in a good place. I’ve cut myself off from everyone and am just so angry. I want this constant pain and jittery feeling in my chest to go away. The GP says I can go up to 40mg then phone her in a few weeks, I hate not being able to see a GP, I have fibromyalgia too so am in constant pain which doesn’t help.

Dementedswan · 26/03/2021 09:11

Anything I need to know about taking the first dose? Should I write the weekend off?

OP posts:
Imagineit · 26/03/2021 09:32

Took my first dose at 4:30pm and felt immediately tired. Not much else to report yet. I slept for ages last night but I needed it as only an hour the night before. I'm welcoming the tiredness as sertraline gave me insomnia. @Dementedswan are you doing a straight switch? What dose of sertraline are you on? I've gone from 100mg sertraline to 20mg citalopram

Dementedswan · 26/03/2021 09:46

I stopped the sertraline last week, so starting afresh. I'm starting off on 10mg as was so ill on sertraline.

Pleased you got a good night's sleep, bet that's done you a lot of good Smile

@Dementedswan what side effects did sertraline give you?

I feel calm today...it's a bit disconcerting!

Dementedswan · 26/03/2021 11:26

Easier to say what didn't I get @Imagineit Grin headaches, sickness, diarrhoea, I lost half a stone ish I think, odd random periods and spotting. Also tiredness and insomnia.

Hope that feeling of calmness carries on!

@Dementedswan how did you find coming off the sertraline?

Dementedswan · 26/03/2021 11:58

@Imagineit I felt much better within a couple of days. All side effects disappeared. Also with the sertraline I didn't notice any difference to my mental health at all.

Hoping the citraplam helps and there's no nasty side effects. I will miss a Wine on a weekend tho!

Imagineit · 26/03/2021 19:26

@Dementedswan so you start tomorrow? Are you starting with 10mg? What time are you taking it?

Dementedswan · 26/03/2021 19:33

I am. Not sure what time. The docs did say morning I'd the best time to get full benefit. Yes starting on 10mg.

I've been taking 20mg of Certraline since November, it works great for me, and I take it at night.
Live with depression but don't usually take anything, but was very anxious, hoping to go down to 10mg, as I don't need knocking out anymore but the ability to function.

My ds2 takes sertraline, he said that Citalopram really was bad for him and made him ill. Unfortunately he didn't say how.

Dementedswan · 26/03/2021 19:43

Does citrolpam knock you out?

OP posts:
EmmaGrundyForPM · 26/03/2021 20:11

Not for me. I take 20mg every.night and it doesn't knock me out. But it enables me to function. I'm petrified that my GP will want me to stop taking it. I really can't explain how much better I feel since I've been taking it
