mental health act assessment

I'm going to have a MHA assessment in the next few days. How likely is it that I'll end up in hospital? My CPN said they'd used her views into account, when I said I'm tell them I'm doing ok.

This must be a really worrying time for you. Do you have some support?

It's impossible to know what the outcome of the assessment should be, but do remember they have to make the least restrictive choice to keep you safe. If there is mention of needing to go into hospital, you could offer to go voluntarily, rather than under section?

SnowyMouse · 19/03/2021 15:55

I've warned my sister (she's my nearest relative). My psychiatrist thinks I should be in hospital, she came out to see me yesterday

You'll end up in hospital if you're a danger to yourself or others.

Namechange1991x · 19/03/2021 17:24

What's your mental health condition? You are able to articulate yourself well, so if you aren't wanting to go, are you.willing to engage with the crisis team? Do you feel able to keep yourself safe?

SnowyMouse · 19/03/2021 17:27

The crisis team are coming out twice daily over the weekend. I have psychosis. This is part of the problem, I think I'm ok in the community, they don't agree.

Do you have anyone at home with you?

CatsHairEverywhere · 19/03/2021 19:39

Is there anyone that can stay and care for you? Do you have children, a partner?

Goneback2school · 19/03/2021 19:45

I work in a crisis team in Ireland though. Nobody here can tell if you need to be in hospital. What has your CPN said? Do you have family support?

SnowyMouse · 19/03/2021 19:51

I have carers coming in for a physical disability I have. I don't have family close by.

OP posts:
Namechange1991x · 19/03/2021 19:56

Do you live alone? Any children?

Namechange1991x · 19/03/2021 19:57

And why do they want to do a MHA?

SnowyMouse · 19/03/2021 21:02

They are saying I’m not going after myself and not taking meds

OP posts:
Namechange1991x · 19/03/2021 21:57

Do you think you may benefit from hospital or do want to go deep down?
If you want to stay at home, could you start taking your medication and continue seeing the crisis team?

SnowyMouse · 20/03/2021 12:55

I don't want to go to hospital, but I can't take my meds either. It's really tricky.

OP posts:
SavingsQuestions · 20/03/2021 12:58

Why can't you take your meds?

Psychosis is tricky as it sometimes needs someone outside ourself to see what is going on. Could you plan to take in a book/some puzzles/whatever you like so it feels less out of control?

SnowyMouse · 20/03/2021 13:24

The meds are poisoning me. I could bring a puzzle book.

OP posts:
SavingsQuestions · 20/03/2021 13:28

Would you accept alternate meds? Can you suggest this as a possibility you would accept.

Plan to go in and pack some nice things to make it more pleasant. Treats? Things to do. Phone charger. Change of clothes.

SnowyMouse · 20/03/2021 14:05

I could try suggesting different meds, I don't know if I'd take them or not.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 20/03/2021 14:11

The criteria for detention are

-You have a mental illness
-It is of a nature and or degree requiring treatment in hospital
-There is a risk to your own health (includes your mental health) and safety or that of others

The assessors are required to consider the least restrictive option for treatment which looks like it would be home treatment with the crisis team. However if you are not taking medication and therefore not getting better then that will be deemed to have failed.

If you want to stay at home you need to find a medication regime you an agree to and then stick to it.

When you say it's poisoning you do you mean due to side effects or literally. If you mean literally then that might be a delusional idea.

SnowyMouse · 20/03/2021 15:26

Thanks for that. I'll ask if I can try different meds.

OP posts:
SavingsQuestions · 20/03/2021 16:06

I suspect the medical people are not agreeing about the poisoning.

I really feel for you OP. I think it must be frightening to know you have psychosis and have your mind tell you things that seem very very real.

I really think as you have some insight if you suspect you may need hospital to go with it and make it as pleasant for yourself as you can. Have you been in before?

Do you trust these people? Have they helped in the past when you were unwell? Have you felt better?

SnowyMouse · 20/03/2021 16:31

I have been in hospital before, formally and informally. I don't know the current inpatient psych, but do know the cmht psychiatrist. I thought I trusted her, but hearing she's recommended I get sectioned makes me question that.

OP posts:
Namechange1991x · 20/03/2021 17:42

It seems if you wish to stay at home you would need to take your medication. Could you try taking it under the home treatment team? Be better that way than potentially forced in hosptial.

It's not about trust, you can still trust her, but ultimately it is a job for them and they have to do what is professionally correct or they will get into trouble.

SnowyMouse · 20/03/2021 19:20

I can try, but it doesn't make sense to take something that's harming me

OP posts:
PotteringAlong · 20/03/2021 19:23

I suspect that it’s not harming you, that your psychosis tells you it’s harming you, and that’s the reason they want you in hospital. In fact, I think that if you take your medication, far from poisoning you, it would probably help you a lot and they’re just trying to help you Flowers
