Ring cutting experiences

I'm so obese now, at least 18 stone. I have very little will to lose weight at the moment and the way I've been feeling the last few years that's not going to change anytime over the next few years. My fingers are so fat, when I'm hot which I am a lot my fingers hurt where my rings are. I've not been able to get them off in about 5 years. I worry about emergencies/medical reasons in case I need a scan which requires ring removal. I need them cutting off but am so embarrassed. Anyone had this done because of being obese? Where can I go? I'm beyond binding etc

Hey. Have not been there but you definitely need the rings off. Try not to think of it as an embarrasment, just as something that needs to be done. No need to put emotions into it ! Other people just don't care as much as we do about our appearance and speculating about what they think is really a waste of time.

As to where to go - I'd start with a jeweler personally ! A real one, not a retailer.

Ages ago I put on a heap of weight on medication. I got my ring off myself after thinking it would never in a million years work.
There are videos online showing you how to get it off with thread, dental floss or string. I used a thin, wax coated string.
It was bloody agony and I really, really panicked halfway through but I persevered as I couldn't see that I had any choice at that point!! It came off. Huge relief.
Honestly, have a really good look on YouTube.

I did use thread many years ago and I too found it extremely painful and got panicky. I was not as fat then. There's nowhere for the fat to go!

Hi OP, I had a ring I couldn't remove a few years ago. I went to a local jeweller and he just snipped it off (no pinching/pain) he didn't bat an eyelid. They can also make good the damage and size it up a bit if you want.

I'd get it done before the weather gets warm, as hands swell in the summer.

I've also given up on Spanx recently for similar reasons, I want to put a laugh emoji but I think a crying one is more suitable 😢

All emergency departments have ring cutters. Common piece of basic equipment.

Thanks for the replies. I really didn't expect to get any responses so quickly what with it being almost 3am! I just woke up worrying for some reason.

I am genuinely interested as to why you are all still awake and mumsnetting. I do wake up most night around now and have a little look. Normally get back to sleep about 10 min before my alarm goes off

I need my rings cutting off so they can be resized! It'such a common thing!

FelicityBeedle · 18/03/2021 03:24

You can actually buy a ring cutter online if you’re worried about going to ask someone to do it

I love the nightlife of mumsnet, I'm awake just 46 but suffering with night sweats and restless broken sleep, got to love hormones l.

So rather than toss and turn I get the lamp on have a drink and potter for a while.

Lots of other are mums with little ones and our global friends.

The advice is great, ring cutting is so common, and sending hugs.

I stopped wearing rings as my hands swell up when I’m hot. I’m awake as I’ve got insomnia. J go to bed at 12 and lie awake until about now and usually asleep by 5
