Is it safe to post here without being jumped upon by complete strangers? The Mners who don't like the fact that some of us are not always happy have blocked this thread, haven't they?

I am feeling really stressed and anxious today and would so love to have someone put a kindly hand on my shoulder (metaphorically speaking) but when I tried for this yesterday, I was jumped upon a bit.

i have an illness tho i don't think of it as one really more an aspect of my personality but it means i do some pretty reckless and or silly things at times..on the face of it the obvious thing for someone to say would be well dont' do xyz...and it does sound as tho you are making up stories or being dramatic but that is th weirdness of how our brains are wired..fascinatin g stuff really but painful but without pain life would be bland

DumbledoresGirl · 01/11/2007 11:44

I agree zippi. I think you have to experience many different emotions, including the ones we wish we did not have to feel, in order to lead a rich life. I admit though, I could happily ditch the phobic feelings!

it is very hard for people to understand the concept of a mental health problem

you have to be quite an empathiser and imaginative to grasp anything like what it actually means

not at all an easy thing to do

a physical illness is a simpler concept by far

black31cat · 01/11/2007 11:58

So sorry people are being horrid. Can't really advise but sending virtual chocolate!

DumbledoresGirl · 01/11/2007 12:04

OK back to the task in hand. Another school ringing me back. This is like Chinese water torture!

Oh DG I know just how you feel about phonecalls, I hate them. However, I am the person that your call would come through to at my school, if you rang us to come for a placement! I would suggest emailing schools as they are dreadful palces for getting messages to the right person and forwarding an email is far easier. What area are you in?

DumbledoresGirl · 01/11/2007 12:18

I am in South Gloucestershire (hopeful emoticon!)

Do you really think an email would be better? I had the feeling that a phone call would allow the school to at least hear my voice and gain an impression of me that way. An email seems a bit distant. Plus, ideally, I would like a placement sorted or at least a visit to a potential school sorted by the end of this week (ie tomorrow).

Do you take returners to teaching at your school? Is a case of taking pretty much anyone who wants a place if you have the time and space, or is there an element of selecting people you think will fit in with the school best? The placement is only for 2 and a half weeks.

inamuckingfuddle hope i didn't offend you with school secretaries joke...

morgansauntie · 01/11/2007 12:36

Dumbledoresgirl I've got to go out in 5 minutes but I just wanted to say I've been following your thread(s)(its taking me until now to find the courage to post) and firstly I just wanted to send you a big hug, some chocolates and a bunch of flowers. I live with clinical depression, anxiety and a social phobia (this is a lot better now) and have done so for the past 10 years so I have some idea where your coming from.

I will post again later when I come back and have more time but last year BBC3 did a series of progammes called The Panic Room where 2 psychologists helped people with phobias one of the ladies had the same phobia as yourself (a fear of vomit/vomiting) I have this episode on DVD and would willingly send you a copy if you think it might help and if you haven't seen it already.

Now I've got to go and do some cold calling I work as a volunteer for a charity.

Marina · 01/11/2007 12:39

DG, good luck with the cold calling, something I hate too.
I wonder, like inamuckingfuddle, if e-mail is not a better solution for this (as opposed to a seductive cop-out )
I reported the posts on that other thread and I hope many others did too.

DumbledoresGirl · 01/11/2007 12:41

morgansauntie, don't be afraid to post! I am glad that you did anyway.

Yes I saw that series too. Obviously, as a phobic person, I was very interested to see what the treatment was. Unfortunately, I even tried to watch the programme about the emetophobe - what a mistake that was! I was very upset within 2 minutes of the programme starting - some graphic scenes IIRC - and there is no way I could watch that episode again (or undergo that form of treatment). But thank you for the offer. It was kind of you.

Thank you Marina. I guess some of my posts might get deleted too though.

I will email later if I do not hear back from either of the schools that are supposed to be phoning. Maybe I will email schools this pm and follow up with a phone call tomorrow? Bit of a compromise?

morgansauntie · 01/11/2007 12:47

Thats ok I've got to go now I wasn't afraid of posting on this particular thread it was the other one - I can feel myself getting upset and v angry now. Having had a mental illness for ten years and now working for a charity which deals with this subject I still can not understand the stigma and ignorence this illness attracts.

Dumbledoresgirl I hope you have a better afternoon - take carex

inamuckingfuddle · 01/11/2007 13:43

no offence at school sec joke I run the teacher training side of things at my school and know to my cost how ineffective school messaging can be...most decent schools will take returners for a couple of weeks' observations etc just as they will take undergrads who want to find out a bit more before taking the plunge. I think email followed by phonecall a day or two later is a great idea DG, I'm in N East so can't offer you anything here but good luck

EffiePerine · 01/11/2007 13:50

at the other thread: is it me or are there some very nasty people on MN nowadays [looks mistily back into days before pages]

onlyjoking9329 · 01/11/2007 13:54

DDG take no notice of nasty poster on other thread, hope DD & yourself are feeling a bit brighter

DumbledoresGirl · 02/11/2007 15:03

S U C C E S S ! ! !

Just been phoned back by the second school I contacted and been offered a placement!

I was so stressed by this yesterday that I got nowhere, hada headache all evening, rowed with my absentee sh, went to bed early, and woke up with the headache still. Had moreorless decided to give up my search today which would have led to a stressful weekend.

Then I received this phone call! Off to get my children from school feeling much much happier!

Thanks all who spoke to me yesterday. Even if I did not respond directly to you, I read your words and appreciated the support.

I'm not one of your regular MNet mates, DD, so have been waiting to watch others pile in with their congratulations, but it looks like they haven't seen this yet, so here's a quick bump, and a for you. I have followed some of your posts over last few months and know how deep you've had to dig to get this far. Bloody well done.

DumbledoresGirl · 02/11/2007 15:59

Thanks Squiffy. Always open to new MN friends!

morgansauntie · 02/11/2007 18:58

Dumbledoresgirl I've only just got in and seen your good news, congratulations, really well done and good luck with your placement . IMO carrying on after everything that went on yesterday showed real strength and determination. I had to cold call about 20 people yesterday afternoon but only a few were in which was good for me but not for the charity I work for.

zippitippitoes · 02/11/2007 18:59

well done..you did have a lucky day then

currantbunmum · 02/11/2007 19:16

Well done DumbledoresGirl!

Have a gold star, AND a merit point.

onebatmother · 02/11/2007 20:26

bloody bloody well done! See, we told you they'd jump at you!
Excellent.
