I have been on sertraline for only 4 weeks feels longer , but I had a awful 2weeks then finally started going out of house feeling more like me , then weekend I had 3 small drinks of alcohol and I’ve been in bed for 3days back to square one , I wasn’t under impression you couldn’t drink at all , but I’m starting to think sertraline just aren’t for me as side effects are back and when they come back I’m bed ridden I feel that bad has anyone else felt this off few drinks or any other suggestions plz

My GP told me that alcohol has a different effect in some people than others with sertraline. For me, the smallest of drinks just knocks me out - I'm asleep quickly. But I know a friend who drinks as normal on it and is fine. If your side effects returned after drinking I'd probably suggest riding it out if at all possible and seeing if they subside again - and avoiding drink in the future.

Hi thanks for reply , I’m so scared to ever drink off them but that isn’t how want to leave life , Not get wasted but even one glass of wine would be nice once in while and feeling sertraline just does not agree with me in many other ways Sad

There's lots you can try if you're not happy with what the sertraline does. I've decided to stick at it and not drink but there are dealbreakers for everyone. Probably worth chatting to the GP and seeing whether they could give you something else. The annoying thing is it's all about trial and error so there's nothing to say you'll be fine drinking on the next one 😩 but eventually we'll all find the one that suits us!!

Yes I don’t mean to sound like I have to have a drink but I’m young and would love to be able to have a few drinks if I want to , but yes sertraline is not agreeing with me on a day to day basic I thought I got past it but feel really bad again , no energy always tierd unless it’s bed time , banging head never ending Sad

No I understand completely don't worry :). I've never been a big drinker (as it makes my anxiety worse) anyway, so stopping the occasional one I used to have doesn't really make much difference. But its all about quality of life as well and you don't want to spend your life knackered with a headache!

Definitely not time to change AD I think , like you said it’s finding the balance and right one for me Smile

Hey op I'm sure once things settle you'll be fine having a drink. It's my second time on them and last time I found as time passed and I felt more myself the more able I was to have a drink. I was drinking my usual vino after a few months.

I also think there's often lots on here about people feeling better or noticing improvements in themselves within a few days, which is fab, but it can take a couple of months to feel the full benefits. I'm 6 weeks in and I still feel rough sometimes, I am having good days, but also still falling apart sometime and having the 'will I ever get better' moments. I know I will. Just got to ride this out.

I feel like they are just so strong and I’m only on 25 mg and I just still don’t dare go up to 50mg as they just make me feel like crap to point in bed most of time and I just don’t wanna be in bed any more , defo feel worse than started but it’s nice to know someone feels like how I do (if know what mean ) and yes so many people say side effects didn’t last long (few days)
Got 3 children and just wana be fun mom again and not like this everyday Sad

I've found that powdered Ashwagandha root really buffers the worst effects of Sertraline and makes me feel a lot better.

Ok, so 4 weeks is way to early to be steady enough to drink in my opinion. I drink whatever I want now with nothing more than a usual hangover but I'm 9months in and very very stable this last 6 months. I don't think I touched a drink for the first 3 months as I just felt too fragile. Not that we are all the same! But I think you need to let the sertraline establish fully (around 6 weeks I understand) and then slowly check your limits over the next few months before going over 1-2 drinks.

It's really not worth mucking about with previously won back mental health for a few good drinks. Not yet.
